Each year the National Garden Bureau chooses plants of the year to feature. They have proclaimed 2018 as Year of the Beet. This isn’t one of the more popular vegetables, perhaps as most just know it from cans in the back of the pantry, or the “earthy” taste of traditional varieties. Yet beets are easy to grow, particularly in cool climates.

Mulch! How to win the battle of the weeds

Posted on June 25, 2018 |
By Bea Cole

You may have considered a garden but dismissed the idea because you didn’t have the time to weed. Or maybe you’ve had a garden in the past but found weeding to be too much work. Mulching can address this problem.

Mulching your vegetable garden not only cuts down on weeding but also cuts down on water evaporation. It will encourage helpful soil organisms and reduce soil compaction. Mulch can heat up or cool down your soil temperature depending on the type that you use.

Peonies are one of the most beautiful and venerated garden plants. With their massive blooms in shades of red, pink and white and yellow they are the queens of the June garden. And best of all, given fertile soil, good air circulation and adequate sunlight, peonies are not only easy to grow but they are also extremely long-lived.

With spring right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about your yard again. One item that should be at the top of your list is applying mulch to your landscape. This wonderful saying by the American nature journalist, Hal Borland, perfectly captures my attitude at this time of year.

And, while this has surely been an ornery winter, spring is officially here (technically it arrived on March 20 even if the temps might still need to climb a bit).

The bitter cold of January with almost no snow — deep snow actually helps by insulating the ground — I worry that the cold snap could have damaged the roots of particularly vulnerable perennials. We’ll find out soon.

By Judith Irven

Garden trio 1.jpg

This is the dream of gardeners everywhere: A garden that will be beautiful in every season — and indeed in every month — of the year. While this may seem to be a somewhat unreachable aspiration, I can assure you it is not at all out of the question.

We winter-weary Vermonters are already anticipating the flowers that will grace our gardens throughout the coming season. And many of us are also eagerly making plans for the new plants we hope to add in 2018.

From dreams to reality; making plans for your 2018 garden

Johnny'sSelectedSeedsFarm.jpg

January is surely the quietest month of my gardening year. Outdoor chores are limited to a little pruning, and it will be three months or more before the first flowers of spring — snowdrops, daffodils, Lenten roses to mention just a few — start to push their way through the cold earth to greet the new season.
