By John Flowers

LEICESTER — Leicester residents on Tuesday voted 68 to 61 in favor of a slightly scaled-back version of the 2013-2014 elementary school budget of $1,127,521 that they had defeated on Town Meeting Day.

The new spending plan of $1,117,640 reflected $9,881 in cuts, resulting in a 5.4-percent increase compared to this year. Cuts made by the Leicester Central School board included around $2,140 in health insurance-related expenses, $2,758 less in compensation for the school nurse position, and a $5,000 reduction in administrative salaries.

The school board is proposing a revised budget of $1,117,640 for fiscal year 2013-14. That represents a spending increase of $56,982, or 5.4 percent, over the $1,060,658 budgeted for the current year.

Posted on January 24, 2013 |
By Lee Kahrs

LEICESTER — Unlike Otter Valley Union High School, which lost 13 students compared to the prior year, falling enrollment is not an issue at the Leicester Central  School, which grew by 13 students — yet, oddly, costs are still up at the elementary school.

According to Leicester School board member Connie Carroll, current enrollment at the school stands at 71 students, up from 58 students last year. Carroll said they expect 74 students next year.

“We’re projecting a 20 percent increase over the next three years,” she said.

Towns hear triathlon complaints

Posted on June 28, 2012 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

LEICESTER — They may have to agree to disagree.

The Leicester and Salisbury selectboards held a joint special meeting on June 14 to address concerns of a handful of residents in both towns regarding the annual Vermont Sun Triathlon series. While race organizers said some minor changes may be made to appease the residents, it all comes down to coexistence.

The triathlons, which are run on four Sunday mornings each summer, include a swimming portion in Lake Dunmore, and biking and running legs on Route 53 and other nearby roads.
