Local poets to read poems on contemporary politics March 19

MIDDLEBURY — “Poetry makes something happen,” wrote poet Audre Lorde. Local poets and teachers J.C. Ellefson, Tal Birdsey and Gary Margolis will be trying to make something happen when they read new work at Havurah House in Middlebury, Sunday, March 19, at 5 p.m.

All three will be reading work — poetry and prose — which directly or indirectly addresses contemporary politics.

Middlebury seeks tax privileges: Special tax eyed for parking garage

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury is joining a lobbying effort in Montpelier to lift the state’s current cap on the number of towns that can use Tax Increment Financing, or TIF, as a way of bankrolling improvements to public infrastructure.

Specifically, the Middlebury selectboard sees TIF as a potential revenue source for a new downtown parking garage.

“We will not make inroads on a parking garage without something like this,” selectboard Chairman Brian Carpenter said while advocating for TIF at a recent board meeting.

Middlebury approves budget and police dog

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents passed everything on their town meeting agenda, including a proposed 2017-2018 municipal budget of $10,321,456 and a $30,620 plan to enlist a four-legged recruit for the community’s police department.

Police investigating assault at end of college protest

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Police Department have been brought into the investigation of the violence that ended last week’s protest at Middlebury College against controversial author Charles Murray.

Middlebury College Professor Allison Stanger’s hair was pulled and neck was injured by protesters Thursday evening as she and College Vice President for Communications Bill Burger escorted Murray to a car after his appearance at McCullough Student Center. She was treated at Porter Hospital and released.

Special ed teacher accused of fondling a minor

MIDDLEBURY — A Shoreham man on Feb. 22 pleaded innocent in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division, to a charge of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, stemming from his alleged contact with a young boy.

The accused — Mark Zizis, 41 — has been a special education teacher at the Chittenden Central Supervisory Union for the past 11 years, and he is also a martial arts instructor at Green Mountain PPS Inti Ombak.

The public-private partnership supporting the Meals on Wheels movement is one of the most effective models in America. It enables seniors to remain more healthy and independent in their own homes, where they want to be, avoiding far more costly healthcare alternatives.

Voters approve first Addison Central unified school district budget

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory District (ACSD) voters overwhelmingly approved their first-ever unified, K-12 budget on Tuesday by a 1,363 to 466 margin.

The $37.2 million spending plan reflects $30,428,802 in net, local education spending for the ACSD schools serving Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge. That’s around 2.17-percent less than what was budgeted for the combined ACSD schools this year.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents this week passed all the money items on their town meeting warning, including their town budget, a slight raise for their selectboard members, and a proposal to re-establish a police canine program.

Residents at their annual gathering on Monday overwhelmingly passed, by voice vote, a 2017-2018 municipal budget of $10,321,456, of which $7,106,034 is be raised by taxes. The budget will result in a 0.42-cent decrease in the current municipal tax rate.

Middlebury College professor injured by protesters as she escorted controversial speaker

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College Professor Allison Stanger was injured by protesters Thursday evening as she was escorting a controversial speaker from campus. She was treated at Porter Hospital and released.

Charles Murray, a political scientist who has been criticized for his views on race and intelligence, was invited to speak on campus by a student group. He was greeted late Thursday afternoon outside McCullough Student Center by hundreds of protesters, and inside Wilson Hall, students turned their backs to him and booed when he got up to speak.
