Brooks turned passion into collection

NEW HAVEN — Only a few miles away from the Henry Sheldon Museum sits an 1800 farmhouse, bursting with Bill Brooks’ own collection of masks, statues, paintings, pottery and duck decoys — his personal folk art museum.

Brooks, executive director of the Sheldon, started collecting art in 1968 when he bought his first painting. Since then, he has spent his life in galleries, talking with artists and gleaning a unique assortment of folk and professional art.

Airport neighbors to appeal for noise relief

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Public Safety & Health Committee on Monday, Aug. 8, will invite citizens’ feedback on the town’s noise ordinance, including from some Middlebury State Airport neighbors who are seeking ways to lessen the impacts of what they believe will soon be an expanded use of the local airport.

MIDDLEBURY — “I like to photograph people who have strength and dignity in their faces; whatever life has done to them, it hasn’t destroyed them. I gravitate towards people like that.”

Paul Strand’s words hover over a series of black-and-white photos featuring farmers, brides and scenes of an all-too-familiar rural Vermont in the Middlebury College Museum of Art this summer.

VTrans confirms a delay for Middlebury rail bridges project

MONTPELIER — Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials on Thursday confirmed that a $40 million  project to replace Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges will not start this fall, as previously promised. State officials are now targeting September for the release of a revised construction timetable for work expected to envelope downtown Middlebury for the better part of two years.

Transportation in rural Vermont proves difficult for the disabled

MIDDLEBURY — Anyone without a car in Vermont knows that getting around can be tricky, but one summer resident has felt this pain more than most.

Dana Abant came to Middlebury College from New York City this summer to learn French and has a challenge: Abant is blind, and hasn’t been able to find a suitable method of getting around town.

Film festival announces opening night feature

We're all getting excited for the 2nd Annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival starting Aug. 25, and one of the big questions is what film will open the festival. Well, now we know. MNFF announced that its opening night film will be the feature documentary Walk With Me: The Trials of Damon J. Keith. The film will screen on Thursday, August 25, at 7 p.m. at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater. Director Jesse Nesser will speak with MNFF Artistic Director Jay Craven following the screening.
