ACTR nets $100K college grant

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College recently awarded Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) a $100,000 grant. These funds are a contribution toward the 20 percent local matching requirements of a $2.85 million federal grant previously awarded to ACTR for the construction of its Community Transportation Center, which will be located off of Creek Road next to the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) maintenance facility.

Ilsley hosts Iron Chef contest for area students

MIDDLEBURY ¾ The basement of the Ilsley Public Library was filled on Friday night with the enthusiasm of middle school and high school students and a colorful spread of foods ranging from chocolate to fruit pizza as about 20 teens were competing to win the title of “Iron Chef.”

The two-hour event was hosted by the Teen Advisory Group and funded by the library to promote teen after-hours special events.

Festival on-the-Green nearly ready for this year's entertainment

MIDDLEBURY — For over three decades, the Festival on-the-Green has provided a week’s worth of free family-friendly entertainment for Addison County residents.

The community event, which will hold its 34th annual run of three shows a day on the Middlebury green from July 8-14, does not have an admissions fee, but it does carry high costs.

Police recover body of drowned man in Otter Creek

UPDATED 6/22/12, 3:22 p.m.

MIDDLEBURY — A Vermont State Police diving team on Friday morning recovered the body of a man who drowned in Otter Creek on Thursday evening. Police identified the man as Yadji Moussa, 55, of Middlebury.

The Middlebury Police Department received a call at 7:27 p.m. Thursday that a man had gone under and not resurfaced, and they responded to the scene. Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley said due to nightfall the VSP diving team could not begin its search until early Friday.

Sheldon Museum taps Brooks as its leader

MIDDLEBURY — Earlier this month, Middlebury’s Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History picked a local man with experience in the field as its new executive director.

William F. Brooks Jr. of New Haven took over on June 5 after eight years as the development director of the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation in Plymouth Notch.

Sheldon board of trustees chairwoman Marnie Wood said Brooks is an ideal fit.

BMP honors outstanding business, citizens

MIDDLEBURY –– The Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) recognized Vermont Hard Cider as its Outstanding Business of the Year, and John and Roch MacIntyre for Outstanding Citizens at its annual meeting this past Wednesday night at 51 Main.

Outgoing board president Donna Donahue lauded Vermont Hard Cider not only for being an exceptional company, but also for deciding to grow its manufacturing business in Middlebury, their charitable contributions, and their commitment to job security.

Middlebury mulls $6M-10M town hall

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard met on Tuesday to discuss progress in designing new municipal offices and a community center for the town of Middlebury. The vision for the project has been more defined since the board’s last meeting in November but plans still remain tentative because the board members said they want to involve the public more before moving ahead with the project.

MIDDLEBURY –– Tears filled Gwen Buchanan’s eyes as she discussed the improvement in her quality of life and happiness since coming to Project Independence, the senior day care program at Elderly Services Inc. (ESI) in Middlebury.

“When I first came here I was awful depressed with life and I just was discouraged,” the Vergennes woman said. “I’m better now.”

Buchanan is able to attend Project Independence because of her Medicaid insurance.

A Keewaydin adventure

MIDDLEBURY –– Cheers, hugs, signs, bell tolls and a cannon boom greeted the five canoes that pulled up on the shores of Lake Dunmore.

A crowd of more than 100 gathered last Friday at Camp Keewaydin in Salisbury for a ceremonial paddle-in by Expedition 2012, a group of 10 young men who recently completed a 1,200-mile canoe trip to James Bay. The group hadn’t seen this many people since they shoved off in early April.
