Talented singers learn German for Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro"

MIDDLEBURY –– World-class opera usually comes to Addison County but once a year at the June Opera Company of Middlebury performance. And even then it is not usually opera sung entirely in German.

But over the past six weeks 11 singers have studied, prepared and rehearsed  in German for performances here this weekend of Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro.”

Windancer center offers physical, mental benefits

MIDDLEBURY — Alyson Young had always been an active person. But that all came to a crashing halt one fateful day in October 2005 when she was involved in a serious car accident.

“My movement became seriously inhibited,” Young recalled. “My pelvis became twisted and rotated. I had to crawl on the floor to move around. It was really frustrating and painful.”

Middlebury credits Guild for town monument

MIDDLEBURY — Marion Guild left Middlebury 71 years ago with some disappointment. She had just seen one of her male bosses take credit for designing the Emma Hart Willard monument that still stands at the top of Main Street in front of the Congregational Church of Middlebury.

Well, Tuesday provided a triumphant return to Middlebury for Guild, now 95, who received belated credit for being the true designer of the monument honoring the person credited for starting women’s collegiate education in the United States.

New downtown gallery joining Middlebury Arts Walk

MIDDLEBURY — New venues continue to join the Middlebury Arts Walk as the season continues. Galerie Provenance, a new art gallery located at 1 Frog Hollow Alley (previously occupied by BeJewelled), is the newest addition to the monthly event. Galerie Provenance opened mid-July and specializes in American and French art, antiques and accoutrements.

Middlebury warned about potential scam

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury authorities on Friday were put on alert about a woman going door-to-door claiming to be raising money on behalf of the Vermont Electric Power Co. (VELCO) for the Share Heat program that provides fuel assistance for Vermonters. Steve Costello, a spokesman for Green Mountain Power, said the state utilities do not raise Share Heat money through door-to-door campaigns are urging residents to not donate in this manner. Anyone in Middlebury receiving a visit of this nature should call police at 388-3191.

MIDDLEBURY — It’s a picturesque day in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in 2007 and a young couple and their two children are among the scores of people fanning across the deck of the USS Missouri, admiring the iconic battleship that hosted the surrender ceremony for Japanese forces, effectively ending World War II.

MVAA will stop asking for town aid

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association (MVAA) has announced it will cease requesting Town Meeting Day donations from the 10 communities it serves in light of “improved business practices” and a steady increase in calls that have helped solidify the nonprofit organization’s operating budget.

Local drummer pushes for community music

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s Will Smith saw an opening to bring more music into the community and took it, because he believes it is important to everyone to have music in their lives.

“It brings the community together and it’s just very good, especially for a place like Middlebury that doesn’t have much live music outdoors,” he said. “It’s a very quiet town and I want to get something going here.”

Festival met its financial goals, reports surplus of fun

MIDDLEBURY — The Festival on-the-Green capped what organizers said was one of its finest seasons, attracting big crowds who took in 17 great acts amid picture-perfect weather for its 34th annual run on Middlebury’s village green.

“Everything fell so nicely into place this year,” said Festival Secretary Pat Boera, who has helped lead the weeklong entertainment ritual since its debut in 1978.

“I can’t believe how we lucked out with the weather.”
