MIDDLEBURY — Carl Roesch and Caetlin Harwood had owned the diner in downtown Middlebury for just six weeks last spring when they were introduced to one of its biggest annual traditions: the early morning breakfast for graduating seniors at Middlebury College.

“We kept peeking out the door to see when they were coming,” recalled Harwood, “and then — boom — they came in. It was like the whole school was walking up here.”

MIDDLEBURY — Spas are one barometer of a community’s mental and physical health, and last winter the staff at Waterfalls Day Spa, on the lower level of the Middlebury Inn, saw that their clients were suffering.

“Last winter was brutal,” says Sara Daly, one of the spa owners. “It was so icy; we noticed an increase in fractures. People didn’t want to be in Vermont.”

So Daly, along with Waterfalls aesthetician and co-owner Laurie Webb, and massage therapist Sarah Kuhl, got to work.

MIDDLEBURY — It’s not unusual for children to announce what they’d like to be when they grow up, such as a fireman, pro athlete or even astronaut.

Jack Mayer decided in 7th grade that he was not only going to be a physician, he was going to be a pediatrician.

“I always felt a calling to work with kids,” Mayer said.

And Mayer dutifully met his calling, serving thousands of children during a career that has spanned four decades.

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County now has one Chevrolet dealership.

On Dec. 12, Tom Denecker and partner Mike Capra, owners of Denecker Chevrolet in Ferrisburgh and Vergennes, completed their purchase of Middlebury’s Shea Motors, in a deal brokered by both dealerships’ parent company, General Motors.

Shea Motors owner Jerry Shea had been set to sell to a third party after 36 years on Route 7 south of Middlebury village, Denecker said, when GM exercised a standard right of first refusal and offered the same deal to Denecker and Capra.
