'The Lobby' restaurant to open in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — After many weeks of planning and renovations, Michel Mahé has set Saturday, Feb. 15, for the grand opening of his latest restaurant, called “The Lobby,” at 7 Bakery Lane in downtown Middlebury.

The opening, Mahé stressed, is contingent upon his receipt of two final permits — one for occupancy, the other related to health inspection.

February grads complete old Middlebury College tradition

MIDDLEBURY — The 126 seniors who completed their academic requirements this winter rejoiced in the completion of their undergraduate careers during Middlebury College’s annual February Celebration Saturday on campus and at the college’s Snow Bowl in the Green Mountains.

The “Febs” — so called because the majority of them started their college education four years ago in February — will officially earn their bachelor of arts degrees on March 1.

Middlebury's Donna Donahue eyes Vt. House seat

'Face Off' raises record $75K for breast cancer patients

MIDDLEBURY — The 15th annual “Face Off Against Breast Cancer” hockey tournament broke an all-time fundraising record this year, raising $75,000. That put the total amassed for the statewide Cancer Patient Support Program at more than $400,000 altogether over all 15 years.

Tournament was hosted by the Middlebury Otters and the Middlebury Mystix, two local women’s community ice hockey teams, at the Memorial Sports Center in Middlebury on Jan. 25 and 26.

Middlebury standout heads to Winter Olympic Games

MIDDLEBURY — Simeon “Simi” Hamilton, a 2009 Middlebury College graduate, will compete at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games taking place in Sochi, Russia.

The former Panther Nordic racer, a geology major, will be taking part in his second Olympic games after representing the U.S. in 2010 in Vancouver, Canada.

Also representing Middlebury will be Forest Carey, a 2000 graduate and former Panther alpine skier, who will serve as a U.S. Ski Team coach.

Bread Loaf construction project earns green building award

MIDDLEBURY — Bread Loaf Corp. of Middlebury and Hypertherm Inc. of Hanover, N.H., have announced that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded Hypertherm’s Heater Road facility in Lebanon, N.H., with a LEED Gold designation. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and represents the best in class green building practices measuring the design, construction, maintenance and operations of green buildings.

Bingham seeks fourth three-year term on Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectman Craig Bingham hasn’t shied away from the public spotlight during the past year, whether it be challenging the board’s policy on maintaining executive session material or speaking out against a proposal to build new town offices and a recreation center.

He will soon learn whether his positions have resonated with voters. Bingham is seeking another three-year term on the selectboard in one of the most hotly contested Middlebury elections in years.

Freidin stresses public participation in run for Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — John Freidin had been content to stay on the political sidelines since his last run for the Vermont House 15 years ago.

He’s now ready to jump back into the fray — as a Middlebury selectman. Freidin is one of eight residents in the running for a total of three spots on Middlebury’s top legislative panel that are up for grabs on March 4.

Zeoli, LaFiandra vie for interim selectboard position

MIDDLEBURY — In addition to approving the 2014 town meeting warning, the Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday accepted the nominations of residents Ann LaFiandra and Chris Zeoli to fill a short, interim stint on the selectboard.

The vacancy was created by the Jan. 2 resignation of Selectman Victor Nuovo.
