CSAC going strong at 50

MIDDLEBURY — It was in November of 1959 that a handful of area citizens and health care professionals established a nonprofit “guidance clinic” in a small room in Middlebury’s municipal building, a service designed to offer personal and family counseling.

A half century later, that guidance clinic has grown into the Counseling Service of Addison County (CSAC), an organization featuring 255 employees delivering mental health services to around 2,000 clients annually out of 10 buildings throughout the county.

Selectmen hold line on Middlebury budget

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen this week will begin crafting a fiscal year 2011 spending plan with the collective goal of keeping the same municipal tax rate for a second year in a row, or perhaps even lowering it.

“We need to be very careful about this budget,” Middlebury selectboard Chairman John Tenny said, alluding to the ongoing recession and job losses that continue to hit the county.

Artim to join Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen on Tuesday picked Brookside Drive resident Nick Artim to fill out a term vacated at the end of last month by longtime Selectman Bill Perkins.

Artim was one of four candidates who had declared interest in replacing Perkins, who has moved to Colorado. The other candidates were residents Jeremy Rathbun, Ted Shambo and Travis Forbes. Artim and Rathbun showed up for public interviews with selectmen on Tuesday; Forbes withdrew his name from contention before the meeting, but said he may run for the spot when it comes up for election next March.

Mister Ups, town can't OK plan for Bakery Lane

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen and the owners of Mister Ups Restaurant have failed to agree on an easement deal that would have allowed for two-way traffic on Bakery Lane as part of the Cross Street Bridge project.

College reopens debate on 51 Main

MIDDLEBURY — Administrators at Middlebury College have reopened the discussion about the fate of 51 Main at the Bridge, a college-owned restaurant and bar operating in downtown Middlebury.

51 Main hit the chopping block last year, when the college first began looking at serious budget cuts. Officials gave the lounge roughly a year to sink or swim, with the provision that the bar must show at least two consecutive months in the black to stay in operation.

Samaritan helps subdue prisoner at hospital

MIDDLEBURY — A citizen good Samaritan, a brave nurse and an experienced law enforcement officer helped avert what could have been an explosive situation at Porter Hospital on Monday afternoon.

The heart of the story is a scuffle between Addison County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Charles Clark and Robert G. Blaise, 29, of Middlebury — a prisoner who was being examined at Porter Hospital after collapsing during his arraignment at the Addison County Courthouse on Monday.

Job fair planned as filaments firm closes

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Department of Labor will hold a job fair at the Middlebury American Legion on Boardman Street on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to help 62 Monahan Filaments workers who will become unemployed as of this Friday, Nov. 13.

Deputy won't challenge new county prosecutor

CORRECTION: This article originally reported that David Fenster would be sworn in at the Addison County courthouse at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17. In fact, Fenster will be sworn in at 3 p.m.

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Deputy State’s Attorney Christopher Perkett confirmed on Thursday that he will not challenge incoming prosecutor David Fenster in the November 2010 election.

VPR seeks bargain rent for spot on Middlebury tower

Dabbs leaves role at free clinic

MIDDLEBURY — Ken Dabbs on Dec. 23 will step down after a very brief, but tremendously productive tenure as executive director of Community Health Services of Addison County’s Open Door Clinic.

Dabbs took the helm of the fledgling free clinic in July of 2007, when its staff consisted of a part-time director, case manager and a handful of volunteer physicians, nurses and other health care professionals operating out of a small space at 812 Exchange St. in Middlebury.
