MIDDLEBURY — For the past three years, author Jay Parini has spent countless hours tracing the footsteps of Herman Melville through the streets of New York City and in the halls and bedroom chambers of Arrowhead, the 19th century author’s Berkshire estate.

“I would just sort of drift around the rooms of that house thinking about his life,” Parini said. “So, I know many of the scenes of his life pretty well.”

MIDDLEBURY — The Town Hall Theater is in line for a coming attraction that will let people know about its coming attractions.

A new, 10-feet-tall-by-3.5-feet-wide marquee, made of hand-forged steel will soon stand in front of the THT at the intersection of Merchants Row and South Pleasant streets. The new marquee — to be installed before the end of the year — will provide a very sturdy and classy message board on which the theater will be able to communicate its many events to the Addison County community.

College's quidditch tourney moves to NYC

Posted on November 11, 2010 |
By Tamara Hilmes

MIDDLEBURY — This weekend, the fourth annual Intercollegiate Quidditch World Cup is slated to take place, not on Middlebury College’s grassy Battell Beach, but in the heart of New York City.

“We are all very excited for this weekend,” said Middlebury College senior and member of the undefeated Middlebury quidditch team Matt Engel. “I think everyone is a little disappointed that the tournament isn’t being held at Midd because we love playing in front of the Middlebury community. However, we also are thrilled that the game has grown popular enough to force us to change venues.”

By Andrea Suozzo

MIDDLEBURY — The romance between Laura Wright and Samuel Clemens was a whirlwind on the New Orleans riverfront, lasting only three days in the spring of 1858.

The passionate (though chaste) meeting had a lasting impact on the lives of both young people long after they went their separate ways — 14-year-old Laura to become a schoolteacher in Los Angeles; 22-year-old Sam to pilot steamboats and, later, begin writing under the pen name Mark Twain.

Student thespians hope to take flight in 'Peter Pan'

Posted on November 8, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center’s Addison Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) is seeking to raise $11,000 to help its planned performance of “Peter Pan” soar to lofty heights.
The $11,000 is needed to hire Flying by Foy — a professional aerial choreography company — to literally get A.R.T.’s Peter Pan production off the ground. A representative of the company would come in to rig the Middlebury Union High School auditorium stage with the necessary cables and other technology to allow the student stars of the play to take flight in Pan-like fashion.

Middlebury celebrates opening of new bridge

Posted on November 4, 2010 |
By John Flowers

web_bridge6230.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — An army of pirates, goblins and superheroes poured across the Otter Creek on Saturday by way of a brand new span that had been on the town of Middlebury’s drawing board since the early 1950s.

And as the Halloween revelers danced on what a half century ago was only a dream, town officials had to be pinching themselves.

This was not a trick.

It was a treat.

Over 144 homeless in Addison County

Posted on November 4, 2010 |
By Tamara Hilmes

MIDDLEBURY — George is a single, self-employed carpenter. Things usually get a little slower over the winter months, but he cannot find anything this year. He has not paid his rent in three months, and his landlord continues to call and stop by.

This is just one scenario depicting homelessness in Addison County that Ingrid Pixley presented to an audience of around 30 at Middlebury College’s final poverty symposium lecture on Thursday.

Couple found not guilty of disorderly conduct

Posted on November 4, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

MIDDLEBURY — On Sept. 30, Goshen residents David and Erica Sabatini were acquitted of the charges of disorderly conduct leveled against them last April.

The dispute between the Sabatinis and the state was resolved after a trial that lasted most of two days and a number of witnesses.

Attorney Oliver Cleary, who represented the defendants, said that it’s unusual for a disorderly conduct charge to go to court — it is usually settled before a case gets to trial. But, he said, the Sabatinis hoped to prove their innocence rather than settling the case.
