Fenns appeal gravel pit denial

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Fenn family have decided to appeal to the Vermont Environmental Court the Middlebury Development Review Board’s denial of their application for a proposed gravel pit off Route 116.

NPR journalist serves up Tea Party twist

MIDDLEBURY — Longtime National Public Radio journalist John Hockenberry at a Tuesday appearance in a Middlebury College lecture room ordered everyone to empty their pockets of change.

“Look at what you’re holding in your hand,” he said, encouraging everyone to take a good, hard look at the pennies.

“What you are holding in your hand,” he continued, “is one of the most powerful, historical ironies in American history.”

Film features local beekeper

MIDDLEBURY — The independent documentary film that earlier this year created quite a buzz — literally — at film festivals from Rhode Island to Seattle to Maui will make an appearance in Middlebury this week.

“Queen of the Sun: What are the bees telling us?” briefly features Bridport bee expert Kirk Webster and his mite-free colonies in an effort to share an alternative look at what people are calling a “global bee crisis” currently in effect.

Reiff turned minutes into 28-year recording UD-3 board

MIDDLEBURY — It was in 1982 that then-UD-3 school board Chairwoman Natalie Peters asked Helen Reiff if she wouldn’t mind taking minutes for the group, which oversees Middlebury Union Middle School and High School.

She accepted the gig, and those minutes turned into years — 28 of them, to be precise. Now Reiff, concerned that her failing hearing might prevent her from accurately performing the job she has enjoyed so much, has decided to resign as the UD-3 board’s recorder.

Bats delay $4m bridge rebuild

Middlebury firefighters request help in assessing station needs

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury firefighters want to hire a consultant to help determine if the department’s current two firehouses can be preserved and improved, or whether it would make better financial sense to build a new, more centrally located station.

“We are at point where we feel we need to have a feasibility study,” Middlebury Fire Chief Rick Cole told selectboard members on Tuesday.

“This is strictly the first step.”
