Afghan students find new hope

MIDDLEBURY — Two weeks ago, most members of this year’s incoming class at the Gailer School were soaking up some rays at the beach, playing ball, catching a flick at the movie theater or just chilling out at home.

Meanwhile, two of the school’s newest enrollees were almost a half a world away, preparing for a hazardous, life-changing journey through a war-torn countryside to board a plane for the safer climes of Addison County, Vermont.

Porter hospital to raise rates to cover mandatory cost, tax hike

MIDDLEBURY — In the complex world of hospital budgets, a 4.4 percent rise in revenue added to a 1 percent decline in expenses, but which yields a $90,000 loss for the year is understandable.

So is a tax increase imposed by the federal government that will add an additional $1 million in expenses in 2011, not to mention an $814,060 expense for a digital record keeping system that is mandated under state law.

Morgan horse museum is trotting to Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The National Museum of the Morgan Horse will soon trot from its current headquarters in Shelburne to what officials hope will be a more stable home on Middlebury’s Main Street.

Amber Broderick, director/archivist for the NMMH, confirmed on Thursday the museum had signed a five-year lease to occupy the former Vermont Beads & Fibers location at 34 Main St., next to the National Bank of Middlebury.

Midd. starts town plan rewrite effort

Ralston tapped for Middlebury race

MIDDLEBURY — Paul Ralston’s first political campaign proved a whirlwind affair — a mere 48 hours. But his compressed effort concluded in successful and thrilling fashion on Tuesday evening when the Middlebury Town Democratic Committee voted 6-5 to select Ralston as Rep. Steve Maier’s replacement on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.

Leaders team up at local school

MIDDLEBURY — The start of classes this week at Mary Hogan Elementary signaled the beginning of a new leadership structure at the Middlebury school.

Longtime Principal Bonnie Bourne and Associate Principal Tom Buzzell are now listed as co-principals. The move, according to ID-4 School Board Chairwoman Lucy Schumer, is intended to better reflect the shared responsibilities at the school.

Rep. Maier withdraws from House race

MIDDLEBURY — The Aug. 24 primary provided a lot of fireworks, but Addison County saw arguably its biggest political bombshell detonate two days after the election.

Rep. Steve Maier, D-Middlebury, officially withdrew from the Nov. 2 general election ballot on Thursday, thereby giving the Middlebury Democratic Committee seven days in which to pick someone to run in his stead.

Courthouse business might shrink to one floor

MIDDLEBURY — People visiting the Frank Mahady Courthouse in Middlebury will soon notice some subtle changes in how Addison County’s court system is organized and conducts business.

And eventually, people will notice some big changes — including the ability to file their complaints electronically and potentially see court offices consolidated within a single floor of the 40,000-square-foot courthouse building.

Zoning change pitched near new Middlebury bridge

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard is considering an interim zoning change that would open the door to more business development near the east end of the soon-to-be completed Cross Street Bridge.

The board is tentatively set to hold a public hearing on Sept. 28 to receive feedback on the plan, which calls for zoning for properties fronting Cross and South Pleasant streets to be changed from “office-apartment” to “village-residential-commercial.”

Middlebury traffic patterns to change

MIDDLEBURY — Town officials on Thursday released a construction update stating that traffic patterns in downtown Middlebury would be changing between Friday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Sept. 3, to accommodate the completion of the roundabout and related paving.

The update stated that College Street would undergo paving and painting work for parking spaces between Friday, Aug. 27, and Monday, Aug. 30.
