House OKs health care bill with local support

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County’s House delegation on Thursday voted along party lines on ground-breaking health care reform legislation that will now move on to the state Senate.

The Vermont House voted 92-49 in favor of H.202, legislation that establishes a road map for a single-payer health care system for the state.

Aurora students reach for the stars

MIDDLEBURY — In the future, astronauts exploring the parched reaches of the moon and outer space may well owe a debt of gratitude to students of Middlebury’s Aurora School. That’s because eight fifth- and sixth-graders at the small private school have developed two water recycling schemes that NASA will be reviewing — and lauding — as part of a national scholastic competition.

Syria holds Ripton man in custody

MIDDLEBURY — After a tense search, the family of Middlebury College student and Ripton native Pathik “Tik” Root has ascertained that he is “safe and well,” in the custody of Syrian authorities.

The search for Tik Root has been on since shortly after March 18, when, according to his father, Tom, he likely went out to observe the protests that were happening in Damascus, where he was studying Arabic, and was picked up by the police.

Middlebury losing no. 2 official

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Assistant Town Manager Joe Colangelo will be stepping down this week to take the job of town administrator of Hinesburg.

Colangelo has served as Middlebury’s assistant manager for the past three and a half years, focusing on budget matters and human resources.

In a press release, the Hinesburg selectboard said they were impressed with Colangelo’s “candor,” his “dedication” and “his ability to listen to and communicate with the town staff.”

Middlebury officials, developer progress in hydro talks

MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury officials on Tuesday reported continuing progress in talks aimed at advancing a small-scale hydroelectric project at the Otter Creek Falls.

The Holm family has been seeking to install a water turbine that would harness electricity from the creek as it flows through a flume under a downtown building (owned by the Holms) that borders the south side of the Otter Creek Falls. It is a project that could generate more than 1 megawatt of electricity — enough to power the downtown area, according to Anders Holm.

Allison voices real radio

MIDDLEBURY — When radio pioneer Jay Allison spoke at Middlebury College on March 16, the turn out was significantly larger than anticipated. After moving to a larger auditorium to accommodate hoards of eager listeners, dozens of students and community members were turned away from the free talk due to what organizers called “a fire hazard.”

College opens two new programs in Middle East

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College administration announced this month that it will launch two new schools in the Middle East in the coming years, bringing its total number of schools in the region to three.

Middlebury launched a program in Alexandria, Egypt, in 2007. Students in that program were evacuated in late January in the face of growing unrest in the country. The two new programs are in Beer Sheva, Israel, and Amman, Jordan.

Ripton's Pathik Root detained in Syria

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College student and Ripton native Pathik “Tik” Root has been detained in Syria by the authorities there since March 18, his father, Tom, told the Independent on Friday.

Tom Root said that in a Wednesday night meeting with the U.S. consul, Syrian authorities confirmed that they were “almost certain” that Tik Root was in their custody.

MIDDLEBURY — The Counseling Service of Addison County (CSAC) has instituted a hiring freeze and could resort to layoffs depending on the severity of mental health program cuts lawmakers are considering for the fiscal year 2012 state budget.

Forum focus at college is Japan's future

MIDDLEBURY — As Japan struggles to rebuild following the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami, people across the world are following closely the aftermath — and its implications for nuclear power worldwide.

A Monday panel discussion at Middlebury College brought in experts from the faculty to address a wide range of topics — cultural and anthropological, historic and scientific.

Kyoko Davis, a professor of Japanese studies, led off the event, speaking to the four dozen people who had gathered to hear experts speak on the issue.
