Reduced burden for middle class key to Howard's Lt. gov. run

Posted on July 12, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — To say that Steve Howard entered politics at an early age would be an understatement.

The 38-year-old Rutland City Democrat was 13 years old in 1984 when he covertly campaigned for then-gubernatorial candidate Madeleine Kunin. He recalled that he had to stump slyly so as not to incur the wrath of his politically conservative dad in Rutland County — which remains one of the reddest regions in a primarily blue state.

Freeman steps into shoemaking niche

MIDDLEBURY — “Just speak up if we can help you,” Dan Freeman called to the customers who’d ambled into the Middlebury shoemaker’s shop.

Just as quickly as he’d looked up, he was back to work. Behind his worktable, Freeman’s hands were in constant motion — stretching the leather in one shoe, and boxing up another pair to ship off to a customer. He pulled lasts, the foot-shaped models used for designing shoes, from the crowded shelves around his workbench.

Posted on July 12, 2010 |
By Tamara Hilmes

MIDDLEBURY — Bits of Russian, French, and other languages could be heard in downtown Middlebury and at local swimming holes on Thursday afternoon rather than on the Middlebury College campus, as students in the college Language Schools were freed from their classrooms and air conditioned-less rooms and allowed to frolic in cooler spaces.

web_ElderCare3_7543.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Growing older doesn’t just bring decisions about personal care for the elderly and their families. When people leave the workforce, many also encounter new financial worries.

As the Baby Boomer generation ages into the country’s elder care systems and the economy continues to struggle, seniors are finding it harder and harder to get financial help for the amount of professional care that they need, or the levels of comfort that they hope for.

Adult children face tough decisions in care for aging parents

Posted on July 8, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

MIDDLEBURY — “Americans hate aging,” said Joanne Corbett, executive director of Elderly Services Inc. in Middlebury.

Her listeners, attendees at an “Introductory Eldercare” class last month, were all caring for — or thinking ahead to a time when they would be caring for — an elderly relative.

Corbett described the many factors that families find themselves juggling when it comes to planning elder care, generally for a parent or other close relative.

MIDDLEBURY — When the Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) closed the financial books on the recently concluded academic year, UD-3 school board members got a pleasant surprise — a $212,006 surplus from the 2009-2010 UD-3 budget, which encompasses spending at Middlebury Union Middle School and High School.

Now the board is planning how to spend a portion of that surplus and crunching the numbers to see if it can propose a smaller spending plan it its 2011-2012 budget.

Middlebury to vote on water bond

Posted on July 8, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, July 13, to cast ballots on a $3 million, 20-year bond to chip away at a mounting backlog of needed repairs to the town’s water system infrastructure.

The backlog of projects has been created by town officials’ decision to apply a substantial portion of Middlebury’s current water fund balance toward water-related upgrades near the Cross Street Bridge project while the ground in that area is still ripped up by construction. This has meant that other projects have had to be delayed.

Posted on July 5, 2010 |
By George Altshuler

MIDDLEBURY — How much can you learn in less than 18 minutes?

When the popular lecture series TEDx comes to town on Oct. 2, the Middlebury College community will answer that question.

At the conference, about a dozen speakers will address the theme “How we started from idea to impact.” In keeping with the spirit of the world famous Technology, Entertainment Design (TED) conferences, which the TEDx series grew out of, the speakers will limit their talks to 18 minutes or shorter.
