LAKE CHAMPLAIN — A generation of Middlebury College students has been learning about geology and oceanography on board the R/V Baldwin, a 32-foot Maine lobster boat the college purchased in 1985. It hosts high-tech oceanographic equipment including complex water profilers, sonars and piston and gravity corers that have enabled students and faculty to investigate sediment and boat wrecks on the bottom of Lake Champlain.

MIDDLEBURY — Anais Mitchell, Moira Smiley and Abigail Nessen Bengson are all versatile, up-and-coming musical artists who regularly perform in venues across the country.

They also have something else in common.

All three can trace their musical lineage to a common stage — the Bridge School in Middlebury, where their artistic talents were nurtured in a converted dairy barn off Middlebury’s Exchange Street.

Middlebury hopes to slow Route 7 traffic

Posted on August 12, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen on Tuesday agreed to seek a lower speed limit on Route 7 South between Middlebury village and East Middlebury, an action prompted at least in part by last week’s fatal accident at the intersection of the highway and Cady Cross Road.

Middlebury Development Review Board member Scott Foster came to the meeting to urge selectmen to petition the Agency of Transportation to lower the 50 mph limit between G. Stone Motors and Route 125.

Rotary centerpiece still hot topic

By Andy Kirkaldy

MIDDLEBURY — A small offshoot of the $16 million Cross Street Bridge project continued on Tuesday to take up a large part of Middlebury selectmen’s time — the question what to place in the 22-foot circle in the middle of the new roundabout that workers began to build this week at the bridge’s downtown end.

In late June, a committee appointed by selectmen recommended a prominent public work of art that should be 20 to 25 feet tall, lighted at night, and designed to be appreciated from a safe distance.

Kudos, caution after Calif. marriage ruling

Posted on August 9, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County attorney and same-sex marriage advocate Beth Robinson hailed a federal judge’s ruling last week that struck down California’s ban on same-sex unions, but she cautioned that the decision does not guarantee a national pathway to equal rights for gay and lesbian couples.

“It confirms what we have been saying all along — the Constitution doesn’t countenance carving out gay people from the same right to marry that other citizens take for granted,” Robinson said during a phone interview on Thursday.

“It is a significant win,” she added.

MIDDLEBURY — It would be an understatement to say that the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center (PHCC) has been through a sea of change since Director Lynn Coale took the helm eight years ago.

During that time, the PHCC has established a new $3.7 million “North Campus” building in Middlebury’s industrial park; expanded its course offerings and enrollment; and completed the transition to self-governance from having been previously managed by the UD-3 school board.
