Middlebury Police Log: Police respond to domestic issues

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Ashlee L. Hathorn, 24, of Salisbury for retail theft and driving with a suspended license, following an investigation at the Hannaford Supermarket on June 8.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•Placed, into the protective custody of Porter Hospital for mental health counseling, a man who had allegedly been involved in a domestic disturbance at a Jayne Court home on June 3.

•Responded to a noise complaint at a Case Street residence on June 3.

Middlebury closes in on $228K grant to help downtown

MIDDLEBURY — The citizens’ group Neighbors Together — which has been working on ideas to help downtown Middlebury weather the 2019-2021 construction storm that will come from the replacement of the Main Street and Merchants Row bridges — announced Friday, June 7 it had landed a $228,750 state grant to promote and market affected businesses during the big dig disruption.

“Clearly, we are pleased,” said Nancy Malcolm, a leader of Neighbors Together. “A lot of work was put into this (grant application) by a lot of people.”

Mary Hogan wins solar array in "Way to Go!" competition

MIDDLEBURY — “Way to go” is a compliment one might not hear that often — unless you’re a student at elementary schools in Middlebury, Bristol and Vergennes.

Mary Hogan and Bristol Elementary students placed second and third, respectively, out of 76 schools that competed in this year’s Way to Go! Challenge, a voluntary, incentive-based, recognition program to help students adopt healthier and more environmentally sensitive transportation habits. Schools are awarded points based on their Way to Go! activities during the academic year.

Middlebury reappraisal notices are out

MIDDLEBURY — Attention Middlebury property owners.

You should be receiving in the email an official “Notice of Change of Appraisal” booklet relating to new valuation numbers that have been assigned as part of the recently completed reappraisal of townwide properties. This booklet, according to the Middlebury Board of Listers, will be your only notice of appraisal, so watch for the 8.5-inch-by-11-inch booklet with a hot-pink cover.

This booklet has the old values and new values for all properties in Middlebury, both residential and commercial.

Its impressive roll call of literary luminaries includes Robert Frost, Julia Alvarez, Ruth Stone and Jay Parini. You’ll find their work in virtually any bookshop or library.

Middlebury will soon showcase the work of a new crop of poets who will find their evocative sonnets and verses literally making a mark — on the town’s sidewalks.

Fire on Court St. results in Middlebury traffic issue

MIDDLEBURY — An early-morning house fire on Court Street in Middlebury near Middlebury Union High School on Monday apparently did not result in any injuries, but likely will result in big traffic problems.

Police closed Court Street between Monroe Street and Court Street at around 3:45 a.m. while firefighters doused the blaze at 74 Court St. WCAX-TV reported that two other houses were also involved in the fire.

At 6:30 a.m., police opened Court Street to one lane of traffic. Vermont State Police urged drivers to use caution in the area this morning.

Middlebury rail bridges work to intensify next month

MIDDLEBURY — Work will begin in earnest next month on a $72.8 million plan to replace Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges, a massive job that will span into 2021 and will result in closure of both Main Street and Merchants Row during the summer of 2020.

Plastic bag ban on hold pending new state legislation

Residents seek warning structures for Pulp Mill Bridge

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents Irene and Ed Barna are longtime fans of the state’s historic covered bridges. Irene just finished a stint as secretary of the Vermont Covered Bridge Society, dedicated to the preservation of these revered jewels in Vermont’s transportation system.

MUMS student pens prize-winning essay on Emma Gonzaléz

Local students received recognition this year for the essays they submitted to Hildene’s Lincoln Essay Competition. Ainsleigh Johnson, an 8th grader at Middlebury Union Middle School, received first prize for her essay on March for Our Lives activist Emma Gonzalez for Region Three, which includes Addison, Rutland and Bennington Counties. Olivia Campbell of Mt. Abraham Union Middle/High School in Bristol, garnered an Honorable Meniton for her essay. Johnson’s essay follows.
