MIDDLEBURY — In Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater on a recent Friday morning, Anders Bright and Lana Meyer crouched, one nestled against the other, on the floor. Intertwining their hands, they experimented with waves, clasping and twisting their hands in search for the most unsettling effect that would do justice to the Cheshire Cat.

MIDDLEBURY — For the past 11 years, Middlebury residents and visitors have stepped into Carol’s Hungry Mind Café in downtown Middlebury for the coffee, baked goods and relaxed atmosphere to meet friends or do work.

But with major construction on the horizon for downtown, café owner John Melanson is doing his best to make sure his Merchants Row shop will weather the disruption.

“I’m planning on the worst, but hoping for the best,” he said.

Nearly 370 films from 27 countries were submitted for consideration in the 2016 Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, which kicks off next Thursday. A showpiece for those just breaking into the industry, 90 films will be screened at the Town Hall Theater, Marquis Theater and Dana Auditorium during the 2nd Annual MNFF.

The festival draws entries from all over the world, and this year’s event will feature 10 films by Vermonters — some of them natives of the Green Mountain State, some Middlebury College grads and one is the chief of the Burlington Police Department.

Town Hall Theater preserves historic character of building while enlarging stage door

Town Hall Theater 2 CMYK.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — There was only one problem with the original 1884 loading dock door at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater. It was too small to actually load anything into the theater.

“The original door gave us a 4’ by 6’ opening, far too small for the kinds of set pieces we use in productions today,” said THT executive director Douglas Anderson. “The old door was historic and lovely, but it seriously limited the kinds of productions and events we could host here at THT.”

BURLINGTON — The 20th annual Rabies Bait Drop began Tuesday, Aug. 9, in eight Vermont counties as part of a continued effort to stop the spread of rabies among wildlife. Rabies is a viral disease that is mainly found in raccoons, foxes, bats and skunks, and can infect domestic animals and people. Rabies vaccine, if given soon after a human is bitten by a rabid animal, is highly effective. However, rabies is almost always fatal without immediate medical treatment.

MIDDLEBURY — It must be August, since my pulse is quickening with thoughts of the upcoming Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival that will take place Aug. 25-28.  Festival producer Lloyd Komesar was committed to the long haul for our festival, but last year’s popular and well-received first edition insured that we’d do it again. The 2015 event was lots of fun, with a spontaneous air of discovery, as audiences moved around town, taking chances on unknown “first and second films” that provided fresh opportunities for discovery.

Norman Ersting's ceramic sculpture on view at Edgewater Gallery

Posted on August 15, 2016 |
By Addison Independent

Norman Ernsting lead pic.jpg

For most of his career, Norman Ernsting was a puppeteer in New York City entertaining 300 or more children 100 days a year at the Museum of the American Indian — a gig in which he also created all the sets and carved all the puppets. Today, now 79 and spending his summers in Charlotte, Vt., Ernsting uses those skills as a ceramic sculptor focusing on ancient civilizations.

His journey from puppeteer to sculptor was anything but smooth and straightforward.
