Midd student from Afghanistan following dream of pro cycling

MIDDLEBURY — Forty-five minutes before his race at the Catamount Outdoor Family Center on the last Saturday in July, Farid Noori, 24, of Ghazni, Afghanistan, pedaled up to a viewpoint beside the Williston race course. Taking a quick break from his warm-up, Noori, a Middlebury College student, sat and took a deep breath.

“It’s going to be fine,” he thought.

Middlebury eyes new bid to boost economy; composition of panel spurs discussion

Bread Loaf students join with professional actors in summer stock theater

Books and papers are strewn about the floor of the Burgess Meredith Little Theater on the Bread Loaf campus of Middlebury College. Actors file in toward the open stage from all sides, grabbing chairs for a courtroom scene in an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities.” Those not in the scene sit offstage and follow along with their scripts.

Food shelves seeking support, even with gleaning

MIDDLEBURY — Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) is calling for food donations to carry hungry Addison County residents into this fall, when local food drives kick off to help nonprofit organizations replenish their larders.

At the same time, HOPE is beginning to reap the rewards of its annual gleaning program, through which several Addison County farms are contributing surplus fruits and vegetables for residents who can’t afford to maintain a balanced diet.

HOPE Executive Director Jeanne Montross hopes that effort can fill in the gaps.

Campaign violation alleged against sheriff candidate Newton

MIDDLEBURY — A complaint has been filed with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel as to whether Peter Newton, a lieutenant in the Addison County Sheriff’s Department, is eligible to run for county sheriff because a portion of his police salary was paid through a federal grant before his campaign began.

Sheriff Don Keeler, who is not seeking re-election, and Newton said this week there is no basis for the anonymous complaint under what is known as the federal Hatch Act.

Man jailed after kidnapping, lewdness arrest

MIDDLEBURY —  Middlebury police on Wednesday, Aug. 1, cited 51-year-old Lyle N. Birchard of Salisbury on counts of kidnapping and lewd and lascivious conduct, stemming from a recent investigation into alleged incidents at two residences on South Pleasant Street in Middlebury.

In a brief press release issued late Wednesday afternoon, Middlebury Police Det. Kris Bowdish said the alleged kidnap victim was an “elderly, vulnerable” woman, and she identified the second victim is “an elderly woman.”

EastView to host AARP driving course August 30

MIDDLEBURY — EastView at Middlebury will host an AARP Smart Driver Class on Thursday, Aug. 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The 4.5 hour refresher course is open to all drivers 50 years and older and is aimed at bringing people up-to date on changing driving abilities, cars, roads, and laws.

No tests are involved. Rather the event, led by instructor  Baird Morgan, is designed to address questions and concerns of the over-50 driving set and provide help adapting to today’s road rules.

Sheldon Museum installs new outdoor sculptures

Two new sculptures bloom in the flower gardens adjacent to the Henry Sheldon Museum in Middlebury: “Big Fish” by Marty McGowan of Newark, and “Anyman aka The Head” by John Matusz of Waitsfield. Both artists are accomplished sculptors and their work brings an added dimension to the Museum’s founding mission as an art museum highlighting Vermonters. The sculptures were installed in mid-July and will remain until at least the end of the year.

Bergland, Sims prevail in annual Ralph Myhre event

MIDDLEBURY — The duo of Eric Bergland and Mike Sims this past weekend won the top flight of Ralph Myhre Golf Course’s annual Dud Phinney Member-Guest Tournament.

The team of Kirk Goodman and Brett Everest finished second, while the pairing of Scott Whitt and Todd Herrington was third in the tournament’s first flight.

Flight by flight, the top three finishers were:

•  Second Flight: 1. Kris Kelton and Ross Lengyel: 2. Matt Curran and John Curran; 3. David Holbrook and Pat Fallon.

Middlebury Police Log: Resident submits sexual assault kit

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police picked up an anonymously submitted sexual assault tracking kit from an East Main Street residence on July 26.

Police said the kit has been place into evidence and the matter is under investigation.

In recent action, Middlebury police:

•  Referred a local woman to mental health services on July 16 after she alleged hearing multiple gunshots and reported multiple people had tried to get into her Court Street apartment.
