Town Meeting Preview 2015: Middlebury

Posted on February 25, 2015 |
By Addison Independent

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s 2015 town meeting will seem like a ho-hum affair compared to last year’s edition, which featured a vote on a controversial, $6.5-million town offices/recreation center project and an eight-person field competing for three seats on the selectboard.

No such excitement this year.

MIDDLEBURY — Citing a lag in payroll deduction contributions and a variety of other charities to which residents are donating their limited philanthropic dollars, representatives of the United Way of Addison County are concerned about the organization’s ability to achieve its 2014 fund drive goal of banking $720,000 for local nonprofits.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on April 8 will vote on a proposed Mary Hogan Elementary School spending plan of $6,775,965 for the coming fiscal year. That figure represents a 1.94-percent increase over the current spending plan.

Pop-up plays' offer a unique opportunity for writers

By Addison Independent

MIDDLEBURY — Take six writers and give them 12 hours to write a 10-minute play. Include some random ingredients, some curveballs, and one line chosen by the public. The next day, grab a director and tons of actors, rehearse those shows and perform them that night at 7:30. That’s “Pop-Up Plays,” popping up for the second year at Town Hall Theater on Saturday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m. The whole event takes place in 24 hours, which makes it the freshest theater experience around.

Young man from Syria brings expertise on the flute to college in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Ask Boghos Taslakjian how he came to play the flute, and he becomes momentarily flustered. “It’s confusing, even for me,” says the 19-year-old Middlebury College sophomore from Syria.

That’s because Taslakjian has been a musician since before he can remember. According to what his mother says, he began his training on the recorder at age 4, because the flute was too large for him to handle; he graduated to the flute a year later, at the ripe old age of 5.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard members at their Feb. 10 meeting put in motion a plan to eliminate elected and unfilled town jobs they say are no longer needed — that of three auditors.

Doing so will require a change to the town charter that will in turn require approval by the Vermont Legislature, which can only come after two public hearings and a town-wide vote in Middlebury to be held on April 28.

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Jan. 12 cut the ribbon on a new state office building in the heart of St. Albans. Vermont Integrated Architecture (VIA) of Middlebury designed the building as part of a team assembled by development firm ReArch Co. in South Burlington. Replacing a vacant and crumbling brick building on Federal Street, the 45,100-square-foot office building, which will house approximately 168 employees in six departments of the Agency of Human Services, is a large part of the planned revitalization of the city of St. Albans.
