MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center officials late last week identified the University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN) as their choice for affiliation, if the Porter Medical community opts to eschew independence for a partnership with another health care organization. Porter eyes affiliation with UVM Health Network

MIDDLEBURY — The Porter Medical Center Board will affiliate itself with the University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN) if the Porter community ultimately determines that such a partnership — rather than remaining independent — is in the best interests of PMC’s future as it could net Porter long-term financial stability and some major upgrades — including a new medical office building.

The potential affiliation is a decision that will be made by this coming spring, Porter officials said.

Park proposal for downtown Middlebury takes shape

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College officials are poised to build the initial phase of a new public park at 94 Main St., an amenity that will include some play facilities, trees, walkways, benches and a copious number of trees and green space.

Jennifer Murray, Middlebury’s director of planning and zoning, recently green-lighted the new park, which will begin to take shape later this summer.

Entrepreneur lanches online guitar store in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — One day last month, in his storefront on Seymour Street, musician Bill Schafer, the man who once founded Otter Music and then Burlington’s Advanced Music, pulled a shiny acoustic guitar — a 2014 Guild — from the spot where it hung on the wall.

“It’s a beautiful guitar,” Schafer said, plucking a few strings that reverberated a clear, rich sound. “Guild is an American icon. They’ve been around for a long time.”

Middlebury votes for Sheldon and Scheu

MIDDLEBURY — Incumbent Rep. Amy Sheldon, D-Middlebury, and Addison County Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Robin Scheu prevailed on Tuesday in a race between three Democrats vying for the two seats representing Middlebury in the Vermont House.

While there are no Republicans in the running for the Addison-1 seats, Sheldon and Scheu can’t yet begin to size up their desks in the House Chambers of the Statehouse.

MIDDLEBURY — Matthew Gillis held a ruler up to the wall, meticulously marking a line that he and his fellow interns would later use to hang up the photographs in their art exhibition. If the line were to be even slightly crooked, the photograph would hang clearly at an angle unacceptable to the team.
