Lessons and Carols service to be held at Mead Chapel Dec. 10

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College will host the annual holiday event “Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 10, 4 and 7 p.m., at Mead Chapel in Middlebury. Now in its 46th year in Middlebury, this service has been a special Addison County tradition. A large audience of college and community members and families will fill the chapel to share in a sense of community and hopefulness of the season.

Right-wing activist James O'Keefe targets Middlebury and free speech

MIDDLEBURY — This past winter ended with a visit to the Middlebury College campus from author and conservative idol Charles Murray that ended in Murray and two college officials being jostled by a group of protesters sending Professor Alison Stanger to the emergency room.

This winter could start with a visit to town of an even more polarizing figure.

Fixed costs affecting Middlebury town budget

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard is beginning its review of a draft fiscal year 2019 municipal budget that, if left unchanged, would add 2.16 cents to the current local tax rate of 98.2 cents.

But it’s a spending plan that could look different when it’s put before Middlebury voters on Town Meeting Day in March, as selectboard members could recommend both subtractions and additions before agreeing to a final budget proposal by Jan. 23, when it is expected to be finalized.

Middlebury theatre department presents Will Eno's 'Middletown'

The Middlebury College Department of Theatre will continue its 2017-18 theatre season on November 30 with Will Eno’s 2010 play, “Middletown,” directed by Alex Draper.

Inspired by “Our Town,” the play, according to the New York Times, is a “delicate, moving and wry amble along the collective road to nowhere,” and one “that glimmers from start to finish with tart, funny, gorgeous little comments on big things: the need for love and forgiveness, the search for meaning in life, and the long, lonely ache of disappointment.”

Laura Thomas and the Grift cover classics at Marquis this Friday

From San Francisco to New York, Laura Thomas has packed prestigious venues, such as the Rockwood Music Hall (New York), Uncommon Ground (Chicago) and Red Devil Lounge (San Francisco). On Dec. 1, this local singer teams up with The Grift’s Clint Bierman (guitar), Peter Day (bass), Jeff Vallone (drums) to offer a hometown Led Zeppelin show at Middlebury's Marquis Theater.

The Middlebury College Department of Theatre and Dance will present a Fall Dance Concert, an evening of new works titled “Future Felt,” this Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Mahaney Center for the Arts. Six dances will make up an evening of work that celebrates the sharing of Middlebury dance students’ creative processes and research. The performance is coordinated by artist-in-residence Julian Barnett.

Middlebury Police Log: Shire town police issue drunk-driving citation during busy week

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Derek St. George, 22, of Jacksonville, N.C., for driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop on Route 23 on Nov. 23.

Police said they measured his blood-alcohol content at 0.141 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Located a student who had run away from the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center on Nov. 20.

•  Served temporary restraining orders on two local men on Nov. 20.

Dec. 2 'Sleepout' to aid programs for homeless

MIDDLEBURY/VERGENNES — The annual “Sleepout” near the Otter Creek Falls is one of John Graham Housing & Services’ biggest fundraising efforts each year.

This year’s edition will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2. It will begin with a candlelight vigil on the Middlebury green beginning at 4 p.m.

Participants can bring a bag of food, a box of diapers, toiletries, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, a new quilt or set of sheets for a family moving into a home.
