MUMS principal authors a book about recovering from her son's death

ACSD budget draft reflects $31.5M in spending for Middlebury-area schools

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board will soon get to work cobbling a fiscal year 2020 spending plan for Middlebury-area schools. Addison Central administrators recently presented the panel with a first draft calling for $31,534,046 in spending, which represents a 2.24-percent increase compared to this year’s budget.

Area police officers grow beards, raise $4,154 for ailing kids

MIDDLEBURY — Members of three area law enforcement agencies retired their respective razors during the recent deer hunting season, and now they’re celebrating the payoff: A combined total of $4,154 raised for Camp-Ta-Kum-Ta, a camp in South Hero that provides respite, fun activities and support to children afflicted with cancer, and their families.

Middlebury Police Log: Police treat man for self-inflicted injuries

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a Rogers Road home on Dec. 17 on a report of a domestic disturbance.

Police determined both parties were intoxicated and that no physical abuse had occurred. Police said one of the parties was taken to Porter Hospital to be treated for self-inflicted injuries. Officials from the Counseling Service of Addison County are assisting in the case, according to police.

Alleged MUMS shooting scheme foiled

MIDDLEBURY — Two 14-year-old Middlebury Union Middle School students have been indefinitely pulled from classes and face juvenile court citations after allegedly cooperating on a plan to shoot another student, and possibly others, on campus on Tuesday, Dec. 18.

Middlebury police are still investigating the case and are withholding the names of the two suspects because they are both juveniles. They are also not disclosing the names of the alleged target(s) in this case, nor the identity of a heroic student who tipped off adults about the alleged shooting plot.

Hospice agencies are combining services

MIDDLEBURY — Two of Addison County’s most renowned providers of hospice-related programs are joining forces under a single banner: “End of Life Services Inc.”

This impending merger of Hospice Volunteer Services (HVS) and Addison Respite Care Home Ltd. (ARCH) is expected to result in better coordination of services to area residents in the final stages of their lives and their families.

And officials added the consolidation will likely spawn new initiatives to benefit those in hospice care and the loved ones who will mourn them.

Maggie Gyllenhaal comes to Middlebury for film screening

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival is hosting a special screening of the compelling drama “The Kindergarten Teacher” on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m., as part its MNFF 2018/19 Winter/Spring Screening Series at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury. The film’s star, Maggie Gyllenhaal, will appear at Town Hall Theater for a Q&A session following the screening. The Q&A will be moderated by Gyllenhaal’s husband, actor Peter Sarsgaard.

Police provide additional details on MUMS shooting investigation

MIDDLEBURY — After two Middlebury Union Middle School students were detained on suspicion that they were planning to shoot another student, and possibly others, Middlebury police held a press conference on Wednesday morning to give more details on the case and field questions from the statewide media.

Middlebury Police Log: Police look into forced entry, missing silver

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a burglary at a Halladay Road home on Dec. 15. Police said someone forced their way into the home and stole a sterling silver tea server, two silver-plated sugar and creamer containers, and a small silver plate.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a report of three unwanted people at a Maecliff Court home on Dec. 10. Police said the people had left upon their arrival.
