Middlebury is expecting 10,000 for 'Ciderbration'

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Hard Cider doesn’t do anything halfway, as evidenced by last week’s grand unveiling of its new, 100,000-square-foot, $34 million cidery off Exchange Street.

Various state officials and U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., spoke and observed the ribbon cutting for a facility that will churn out thousands of gallons of the company’s popular Woodchuck brand cider.

George joins the write-in race for assistant judge

MIDDLEBURY — There are now three write-in candidates for two side judge slots that until recently had no takers. Longtime Middlebury resident Alice George has confirmed her plans to join Mark Smith and Irene Poole in a write-in effort for the Aug. 26 primary, a necessary step for the candidates to have their names placed on the Nov. 4 General Election ballot.

Jericho couple takes over Marble Works deli

MIDDLEBURY — Noonie Deli’s “Purple’s Pleasure” and “Vermonter” sandwiches still taste and look the same, but they’re now being made under new ownership.

Late last month, the owners of the Marble Works deli, Brian and Jenny Phelps, sold the business to Jericho couple Jay Lafountain and Lauren Barland.

Downtown Middlebury land draws interest

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury has received unsolicited inquiries from a handful of entrepreneurs interested in developing the so-called “economic development initiative (EDI)” parcel off Bakery Lane in the downtown. Town officials are now drafting a formal request for proposals intended to yield one or more applications to transform the 1.7-acre property into a commercial-retail-office hub.

Middlebury dips into option tax surpluses

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday agreed to take $200,000 from the town’s local option tax fund that is reserved for Cross Street Bridge-related expenses in order to bankroll the relocation and undergrounding of utilities and power lines associated with the soon-to-be built new municipal building at 77 Main St.

Construction to close Main Street in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Part of Main Street in the heart of Middlebury will be closed for portions of this week to allow construction crews to replace sidewalk and curbs.

The thoroughfare between the roundabout and Merchants Row will be reduced to one lane between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Monday, Aug. 11, through Friday, Aug. 15. During that time, crews will replace sidewalk and curb on the northbound, or upstream, side of the bridge. Both lanes of traffic will reopen each evening at 5 p.m.

Solar array advances net metering in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Last Wednesday was a good day for sun. For the fourth stop of his annual Summer Solar Tour (which so far have all recorded sunny weather), Gov. Peter Shumlin cut the ribbon on a 500-kilowatt solar array — the first array of its size in the state dedicated to providing electricity through a net metering plan.

Woodchuck has big plans for new Middlebury facility

Patrick Leahy told stories to a group of 50 invited media and friends gathered outside the new 100,000-square-foot Woodchuck cidery and bottling facility in Middlebury on Wednesday of how Woodchuck Hard Cider was part of the “holy water” he keeps in stock at his prestigious office in the halls of Congress.
