UD-3 endorses $400,000 for teams rooms addition

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union residents on Tuesday voted 1,698 to 1,343 in favor of a $400,000 bond to build a “team rooms” addition onto a new Middlebury recreation center that is to be erected on a 2.5-acre parcel off Creek Road.

Middlebury passes town office plan; Carpenter and Asermily win selectboard seats

MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury residents on Tuesday voted 915-798 in favor of a $6.5 million bond to erect a new municipal building and recreation center. Voters rejected, by a 955-731 tally, a citizens’ petition that sought to direct the selectboard to instead rebuild or renovate the municipal building and gym at their current location at 94 Main St.

Voters also elected Dean George, Brian Carpenter and Laura Asermily to vacancies on the town selectboard. Incumbent Selectman Craig Bingham was defeated in his bid for a fourth consecutive term on the board.

Middlebury cleared in town office flier flap

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Attorney General’s Office has found no illegalities with an informational flier that Middlebury officials created and mailed to all local residents explaining the details of a new town office building and recreation center proposal that will be decided by voters on Tuesday, March 4.

Local businesses fight Vermont Gas pipeline

MIDDLEBURY — A group of Champlain Valley business owners spoke out against the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project at a press conference this past Tuesday at the Vermont Soap Works factory in Middlebury.

The speakers, led by Vermont Soap CEO Larry Plesant, urged businesses in Addison County not to use natural gas when it arrives here, possibly in 2014. The press conference was organized by the Vermont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG), a lobbying firm that opposes the pipeline.

'Last call' for Vermont Hard Cider CEO Bret Williams

MIDDLEBURY — Bret Williams has dutifully “tended bar” at the helm of the Vermont Hard Cider Co. (VHC) for more than a decade.

Now, after taking the company from the brink of bankruptcy to its current status as the second-largest hard cider producer in the world, Williams is ready for his “last call.”

Eight candidates seek Middlebury selectboard seats

The Addison Independent has interviewed the eight candidates who are seeking spots on the Middlebury Board of Selectmen. There are two candidates for a one-year term on the board (Dean George and Heather Sealey), and six candidates for two three-year seats (Laura Asermily, Craig Bingham, Brian Carpenter, Ted Davis, John Freidin and Eric Murray).

UD-3 voters OK lease option

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union residents on Tuesday evening voted 306-118, by paper ballot, to allow the UD-3 school board to negotiate a lease with the town of Middlebury for a Creek Road parcel that would host an 11,500-square-foot recreation facility.

Seniors voice mixed feelings about relocating center

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury-area seniors have mixed feelings about the potential relocation of the Russ Sholes Senior Center from the municipal building at 94 Main St. to a proposed new recreation facility off Creek Road. Some of the center’s 12-14 “regulars” said they would have no problem making such a transition, while others said they’d prefer to see the facility remain downtown where they could continue to run errands at nearby stores and banks.
