MUHS track fares well at Essex meet

ESSEX — Nineteen members of the Middlebury Union High School track and field team competed this past Wednesday at the Essex vocational meet, and many of them made their mark.

The girls four-by-800-meter relay team, expected to contend for the Division II title, won the event. Competing were Isabel Olson, Katherine Koehler, Camille Malhotra and Caroline Kimble.

Freshman C.J. Bryant, senior Sam Hodges and Olson, a sophomore, also excelled, each placing in the top five in two running events, topped by Bryant’s pair of second-place efforts.

Victor Nuovo back on the job after health scare

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectman Victor Nuovo rarely misses board meetings. And on the rare occasions he does, it’s usually because he’s traveling abroad to research his latest book project.

However, when the 86-year-old took his place at the selectboard table on April 10 it was the first time he’d been to a meeting in almost six weeks. The reason: He’s been recovering from a major heart attack.

MIDDLEBURY — “Coming down the homestretch,” “the final lap” or “crossing the finish line” are but a few of the classic phrases that come to mind as Bruce and Sue Byers prepare to host the PMC Auxiliary’s final Derby Day event on May 5 in Cornwall.

Through the years, the annual Porter Kentucky Derby Day party has signaled the beginning of spring for many Porter supporters and an opportunity to gather together in support of the work of our community hospital and nursing home.

MIDDLEBURY — A group of conservation commission members from towns across Addison County met at the Addison County Regional Planning Commission offices in Middlebury on Saturday, April 7, for a conservation summit. The meeting was planned and organized as a gathering of members of town conservation commissions to learn about the work of others around the county.

Eagle softball tames the Tigers, 7-2

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School softball team used a three-run fourth inning to surge past the visiting Middlebury Union Tigers, 7-2, on a warm Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles — defending Division-II champions — improved to 3-0, while the Tigers fell to 1-2 for the season.

The Eagles came out strong defensively, recording a double-play on just the second batter of the game, and Middlebury went quietly in the first inning.

Middlebury Police Log: Man cited after driving off a road

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Matthew Ceda, 26, of Middlebury for driving while intoxicated on Valley View Drive, after an officer allegedly saw him drive off Seminary Street Extension three times on April 17.

Police said Ceda refused to submit to a breath test.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a report of some disgruntled customers at the AT&T Store in The Centre shopping plaza on April 16.

Nancy Malcolm leaves mark on Middlebury's planning efforts

MIDDLEBURY — Nancy Malcolm never planned on joining the planning commission. It was former Better Middlebury Partnership Coordinator Gail Freidin who encouraged her to join in 2005.

“I had never thought about it, which begs the issue that you do have to ask and recruit new people,” she said.

Thirteen years later, Malcolm is stepping away from the commission after having led it through a very busy period that included a massive re-write of the Middlebury Town Plan.
