Porter Medical Center receives waiver for skilled nursing care

COLCHESTER — Hospitals and skilled nursing facilities in Middlebury and Brattleboro have received approval from OneCare Vermont, a statewide accountable care organization (ACO), to accept patients into a skilled nursing facility (SNF) without the Medicare required three-day inpatient and/or previous SNF admission.

Fabulous Flea Market returning to THT

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater is pleased to announce the 10th annual Fabulous Flea Market, arriving at the Town Hall Theater on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Each year, a variety of vendors and dealers set up shop inside the theater to sell antiques, folk art, prints, rugs, quilting items, hand-knit multicolored socks and other desirable items. The theater is stuffed with an eye-popping variety of delightful things to buy. Almost Home will be selling delicacies and coffee so shoppers can grab a snack or a meal as they browse.

VUHS hoop star Connor Merrill is back in town

MIDDLEBURY — Connor Merrill describes the first stop on his basketball journey after graduating from Vergennes Union High School in 2010 as both the most challenging and most valuable.

Merrill, a Panton native and former Independent Player of the Year, has landed back in Addison County after an all-star hoop career at Skidmore College (he scored 1,000 points there and at VUHS), followed by stints assisting successful Vermont Academy and Springfield College programs.

Middlebury: Tech gear taken from planes at airport

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are investigating the theft of radio and navigation equipment from some airplanes at the Middlebury State Airport on Aug. 13. Sgt. Mike Christopher said two planes were targeted and that the perpetrators did not force entry into either of them.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call Middlebury police at 388-3191.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a report of some hypodermic needles found under the Cross Street Bridge on Aug. 13.

Kniffin stepping down as Porter Hospital president

MIDDLEBURY — UVM Health Network Porter Medical Center Board Chair Maureen McLaughlin has announced that Porter’s President, Dr. Fred Kniffin, will step down from his leadership role next spring. The search for a new leader for Porter will begin shortly.

Oscar winners, 100 films jazz up Midd Film Festival

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury on Thursday will reprise its unofficial role as “Hollywood East” as it plays host to around 60 budding filmmakers and celebrates some of the best talent the movie industry has to offer.

It’s the fourth annual New Middlebury Filmmakers Festival (MNFF), a four-day extravaganza that will include the screening of more than 100 films and events to recognize the courage and accomplishments of some very talented people.

MIDDLEBURY — Rising junior Jacob Ellen is a key contributor at the top of the lineup on the Middlebury College men’s squash team. A neuroscience major from New York City, Ellen has joined forces with a Middlebury classmate to advocate for a deeply personal cause.

Ellen recently sat down with the Middlebury Sports Information Department for a question-and-answer session about his background and some of this activities off the squash court.

Audet, Ralston set priorities in independent Senate run

ADDISON COUNTY — Marie Audet of Bridport and Paul Ralston of New Haven are hoping to become the first two independents to ever occupy the two state Senate seats representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore.

Ralston, the founder and CEO of Vermont Coffee Company, and Audet, a co-owner of Blue Spruce Farm in Bridport, officially entered the race early this month. They join a field that includes incumbent Sen. Christopher Bray, D-New Haven, Democrat Ruth Hardy of Middlebury and Addison Republican Peter Briggs.

Middlebury's cold-weather homeless shelter to open early

MIDDLEBURY — As homelessness becomes more visible downtown and more of a concern, Middlebury’s homeless shelter, the Charter House, will open six weeks early this year.

Doug Sinclair, co-executive director of the Charter House Coalition, said that in spite of uncertain funding the shelter on North Pleasant Street would open its doors on Sept. 1 this year rather than operating from mid-October to April as it has in prior years.
