Folklife director to give farm traditions talk on Jan. 18

NEW HAVEN — Gregory Sharrow, co-director of Middlebury’s Vermont Folklife Center, will explore farm culture of the past, and how it relates to today’s Vermont, in New Haven on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. in the New Haven Town Offices on North Street. The lecture is sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council.

New owners bring lifetime love of New Haven general store

NEW HAVEN — While today’s customer is a lot likelier to purchase a Kit Kat candy bar than a horse harness, the Village Green Market has been supplying New Haven residents — and acting as an important center for community life — for over 200 years. As the market’s new owners, New Haven native John Roleau and his wife, Margo, will carry on that longstanding tradition.

The Roleaus purchased the store in late December, are carrying out a few renovations and plan to reopen later this month.

Naturalist to discuss moose population on Jan. 12

NEW HAVEN — Naturalist Tina Scharf of Lincoln will give a talk in New Haven on Thursday about some of the reasons moose populations have declined across North America in the southern end of their range. She will also discuss how this phenomenon illustrates general concepts of population dynamics.

The Jan. 12 talk titled “Where Have All the Moose Gone?” will take place at the New Haven Town Hall, begins at 7 p.m. and is part of the Armchair Naturalist Speaker Series, sponsored by the New Haven Conservation Commission.

County 4-H club donates pet gift basket

NEW HAVEN — The New Haven Twilight Tails 4-H Club donated a basket of pet-related products to Homeward Bound, a local animal shelter in Middlebury, in conjunction with the recent Addison County 4-H Achievement Night. The club also made a basket for the Department of Children and Families in Middlebury. Other Addison County 4-H clubs that donated baskets to area organizations were Addison Flaming Manes and Critter Creek 4-H Club, Addison; Mountain View 4-H Club, Bridport; and New Haven Dairy, New Haven.

Home Health & Hospice: Filling a void for 48 years

NEW HAVEN — It was 48 years ago that a group of concerned Addison County residents saw a void in local health care system. There was a lack of professional community care services for patients wanting to heal away from the hospital — where stays were often lengthy for post-surgery monitoring.

Thief returns to retrieve dropped cell phone

NEW HAVEN — A man who broke into vehicles parked at a local trailhead apparently dropped his cell phone in one of the cars, and he surprised the owner of the car when he returned to retrieve it.

New Haven town budget draft includes pay raises

NEW HAVEN — The current preliminary draft of the 2017 New Haven town budget includes a wage increase of at least 3 percent for all town employees.

At its Nov. 15 meeting, the selectboard discussed and voted on additional wage changes for town employees:

•  Town clerk, town treasurer, 5 percent increase.

•  Zoning administrator, 6 percent increase.

•  Zoning administrator’s assistant, 5 percent increase.

•  Full-time road crew workers, 5 percent increase.

New Haven seeks public feedback on new town plan

NEW HAVEN — The New Haven selectboard is nearing completion of its draft of the new town plan and will hold a hearing Dec. 14 to get public input.

The hearing is critical to the selectboard’s goal to get a new town plan on the 2017 Town Meeting Day ballot.

“We know that we need to get this on the ballot,” said Selectboard chair Kathy Barrett.

Local firms support 'Click-it or Ticket' safety effort

NEW HAVEN — This past Wednesday, Nov. 23, local businesses joined law enforcement officers and officials from the Governor’s Highway Safety Council, AAA of New England and the Vermont Truck and Bus Association to promote the importance of seat belt use in a press conference in New Haven.

Sen. Bray to represent state on national infrastructure, energy committee
