Gregory Dennis: Wind energy unites enviros and farmers

Posted on May 18, 2017 |
By Greg Dennis

Environmentalists and advocates for property rights are used to being at odds. Enviros put a priority on preventing damage to the ecosystems that support us. Property rights people are accustomed to reminding us that there should be limits to what the government can force owners to do.

But as Vermont moves haltingly toward cleaner energy, Greens and some property rights advocates, especially farmers, now find themselves on the same side.

These days they’re making common cause around an unlikely topic: wind energy.

Ways of Seeing: Kate Gridley, Confronting death a healthy move

Posted on May 18, 2017 |
By Kate Gridley

My mother-in-law, Lorraine, taught me how to die when I was just entering my forties.

Before that, it was dark and scary.

When my mother’s mother died, she was far away in Wisconsin, and even though I caught my mother crying for the first time one afternoon when she picked me up at school (I was ten), she went off to the funeral alone. In those days, one did not speak of death, especially in front of children. Adults didn’t cry, either, and when they did, it was scary.

Letters to the Editor: State getting real on cannabis laws

Posted on May 18, 2017 |
By Dave Silberman

The very same week that the Trump Administration vowed to re-impose the mandatory minimum sentences that were the hallmark of our disastrous “War on Drugs” (in actuality, a war on people of color), the Vermont Legislature listened to the will of Vermonters, and passed Senate Bill 22, which would end state-level penalties for possession of one ounce of cannabis (aka marijuana) or growing two plants for personal use.

Letters to the Editor: Wind power can benefit farmers

Posted on May 18, 2017 |
By Marie Audet

Since our parents started farming in Bridport in 1958, our family has maintained a strong commitment toward sustainability; doing more with less, implementing practices that reduce energy use, and waste while improving our animals’ health and comfort and protecting our environment. We were so delighted with the results of our “Cow Power” project that in May of 2013 we collaborated with Green Mountain Power to install a wind turbine designed and manufactured in Barre, Vt., by Northern Power Systems.

Victor Nuovo: Friendship — the tie that binds

Posted on May 18, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

Aristotle suggests that love or a feeling of mutual affection between citizens may be a more effective means of unifying a city than justice, indeed that the latter may depend upon the former. It is an alluring thought and deserves to be explored.

Community forum: Teacher health care negotiations is not as simple as governor portrays it

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Sen. Claire Ayer

As you know, Gov. Scott, along with the Vermont School Boards Association and the Vermont Superintendents Association, has proposed that the state save up to $26 million by taking over teacher healthcare benefits. The governor has stated that he will veto a budget without these savings incorporated.

Letters to the Editor: Unfair to blame teachers for rising health care costs

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Millard M. Cox

Here we go again — Vermont public school teachers and their union are being made the scapegoat, blamed for high taxes and the high cost of health care in the state. Can anyone seriously believe that bullying the teachers can save the state $26 million? What are the real causes of the rising costs of health care?

Letters to the Editor: Time to work against animal traps

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Holly Tippett

A significant majority of Vermonters want to ban trapping and eliminate the wasteful killing of wildlife.

The 2017 Vermonter Poll conducted by UVM’s Center for Rural Studies included questions asking Vermonters how they feel about the use of steel leg-hold traps, body crushing traps and drowning traps to kill wildlife. This is a relevant issue now as the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board is considering extending the otter trapping season.

Letters to the Editor: 1870 Mother's Day words valid today

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Bunny Daubner

Arise then, women of this day? Arise all women who have hearts whether our baptism be that of water or tears! . . .We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says “Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.”

From Julia Ward Howe’s 1870 Mother’s Day Proclamation for Peace

The week’s writer is Melinda Vieux, president of Green Up Vermont.

I would like to express greetings and gratitude to many who made Green Up Day 2017 a vibrant reality. Thank you!

To the volunteers: Over 22,000 people of all walks of life and varied ages volunteered to come out and clean up litter from Vermont’s roadsides, public and natural spaces and waterways. They did this before, during and after the traditional day of Green Up Day, the first Saturday in May, May 6 for 2017.
