Around the Bend: Needed: Anti-embarrassment app

Posted on April 19, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

Last weekend at a girls’ basketball tournament, I found myself in a public restroom with my 12-year-old daughter and some other moms and pre-teens. I washed my hands and waved them under the paper towel dispenser to trigger the sensor.

Nothing.

Wave, wave.

Nothing.

Frantic jazz-hands wave.

Still nothing.

My daughter groaned.

“It’s not that kind, Mom,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Just pull.”

Clippings: Dead computer = thoughts on life

Posted on April 19, 2012 |
By Andrea Suozzo

I knew the minute I heard the clicking noise that it was all over.

My computer had been acting up for a couple days, running the fan more than usual, opening applications slowly. Not one to lose faith in my appliances, I’d just ignored it and hoped the problem would resolve itself.

Clippings: Walking a mile in another's reality

Posted on April 12, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

For the past few weeks I’ve thought a lot about a twist on the popular saying, “don’t judge a man until you’ve walked a mile in his shoes.” The twist is this: After four weeks on crutches, I now better understand how it feels to be less than mobile.

Frankly, it’s not that easy to get around out there.

Between the Lines: Doyle Poll: Hang up and get stoned?

“Legalize it!”

You don’t see that bumper sticker on many cars in Vermont. But support for the legalization of marijuana is close to a majority sentiment, if the results of a recent statewide poll are to be believed.

The state Legislature is still taking a very cautious course toward decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana.

But according to this year’s 42nd annual Town Meeting Day poll by Sen. Bill Doyle, a near majority of Vermonters favor not just decriminalizing marijuana, but legalizing it altogether.

Clippings: Presidential visit exciting, dismaying

Posted on April 5, 2012 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

Prior to March 30, the closest I had been as a journalist to anything presidential was Howard Dean’s campaign kickoff in Burlington in June 2003. So, when an email from President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign offered press credentials to cover the president’s appearance at UVM’s Gutterson Field House last Friday, I took a shot. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, to cover the first visit to Vermont by a sitting president in 17 years.

Around the Bend: Didn't win lottery, but still lucky

Posted on April 5, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

My Saturday morning went south the moment I found out I had not become a multimillionaire overnight.

Oh, I knew a single Mega Millions lottery ticket wouldn’t give me a real chance at Friday night’s record-setting $654 million jackpot.

But I didn’t have just one ticket.

Last week, 20 of my fellow Addison Independent employees and I each threw $2 into an office pool. While one ticket offered only a 1-in-75-million chance of winning, we had 42.

It was all we could do not to clean out our desks Friday afternoon.

Community Forum: Test scores don't tell full story

A recent New York Times article by Annie Lowry was titled “Big Study Links Good Teachers to Lasting Gain.” The article was about how teachers who raise students test scores in elementary and middle school have a lasting impact on those students’ lives in the form of raising their income, increasing their likelihood of attending college and lowering teen pregnancy rates.

Time flies, or does it even exist?

I’m old enough that I sometimes look back on days gone by and wistfully express my longing for times past.

Well, I guess you don’t have to be too terribly old to do that. I’ve heard my eight- and 10-year-olds deliver a significant pause and a hint of a sigh after recalling how things were back in the day, back when “Mawci” and “Dawci” would take the preschoolers at Mary Johnson out to play in the kiddie pool on hot summer days.

“Dear Mr. Dennis,

“I recently read your article in the Addison Independent issue dated March 1, 2012, about your thoughts at building a house in Vermont. I wish to take you to task.

“Some months ago you wrote an article about how you considered yourself a ‘Vermontaholic’ citing various attributes about Vermont with which you compassionately connected…

Clippings: Child-free zone marred by adults

Posted on March 22, 2012 |
By John Flowers

My wife Dottie and I were positively giddy.

Our first vacation sans kids (no offense, Diane and Mark) since 1998. So we booked, rather late in the game, a six-day stay at a resort in the Bahamas operated by a certain company named after casual, summertime footwear.

The promise: Plenty of peace, pampering and sunshine in a couples-only environment devoid of sippy cups, high chairs and pre-pubescent meltdowns.
