Letter to the editor: Full rail station, not just platform

Posted on June 7, 2018 |
By Rob Carter

I would like to voice my agreement with David Carlson (Letters, May 31) on the importance of providing a covering for the new rail platform, and would go a step further.

In order to foster the use of rail as an alternative means of transportation, and at the same time encourage tourism, I would suggest that we consider a rail station instead of a simple platform.

Letter to the editor: Rail bridges project could be turning point for town

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By Anders Holm

Necessity is the mother of invention. Downtown Middlebury has been weak in the knees for some time now and the bridge project stands to serve the coup de grace. The bridge project will be remembered as the dark age and if Middlebury pulls itself together the dark age will be followed by a renaissance.

Letter to the editor: Governor Scott's veto of state budget is mystifying

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By Spencer Putnam

Gov. Scott’s decision to veto the budget sent to him by our legislature is mystifying on several counts.

This is a budget passed with overwhelming tri-partisan support, unanimously in the Senate and by a margin of 117-14 in the House. Why should the governor stand in opposition to what is so obviously the consensus of Vermont’s elected representatives?

Letter to the editor: Raising the minimum wage won't drive away jobs

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By Bob Zeliff

It is clear that 30 years of “trickle down” public policies have worked to make high end wages higher and low end wages MUCH lower due to inflation.

The minimum wage today pays for less than it did 30 years ago. Approximately 87,000 Vermonters suffer this wage stagnation.

We have long understood the concept of livable wage. Here in Vermont that is $15.76 in rural areas and $17.64 in urban areas.

Letter to the editor: Ban on coyote kill contests lauded

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By Leslie Blow

A passionate and persistent coalition of landowners, biologists, farmers, hunters, wildlife enthusiasts, and others overcame opposition from paid lobbyists and Vermont’s own Fish and Wildlife Department to ban coyote killing contests for prizes. Vermont will be? only the second state in the country to do so thanks to the successful passage of H.636.

Clippings: The tick conundrum looms large

Posted on May 31, 2018 |
By Sarah Pope

Sarah3848.jpg

As my family and I navigate the hazards of being outdoors this spring, I must echo my older daughter’s question: What possible good purpose do ticks serve? Oh, they kill off weak members of wildlife populations, a kind of natural culling, but after detaching six of the little parasites from my arms, back and neck in the past two weeks, I’m not generating any love, much less understanding, for the little beasts.

As a work colleague said, “Ticks ruin everything.”

Eric Davis: On bending the arc towards justice

Posted on May 31, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric ONLINE.jpg

There is a long history in America of religious voices speaking out for societal improvement and reform within the context of the Judeo-Christian faith tradition.

In the years before the Civil War, Theodore Parker, a Unitarian minister in Boston, often preached to congregations of more than 2,000 people. They came to hear him oppose the Fugitive Slave Act and advocate for abolition. Parker also wrote, and preached, in favor of temperance, women’s rights, penal reform and society’s responsibility to improve the condition of the poor.

Victor Nuovo: Mill's work is 'clear and persuasive'

Editor’s note: This is the 17th in a series of essays about political liberalism and conservatism and the two-party system.

What is Utilitarianism? If you’re curious, there is no better way to find out than by reading Mill’s work so titled.

Ways of seeing: School-fortresses not a solution

Posted on May 31, 2018 |
By Laurie Cox

Cox, laurie.jpg

On a spring morning during my sophomore year of high school, our P.E. class headed to the field for a game of softball. As we divided into teams, the ground began to roll in visible waves. Somebody screamed. Grabbing the backstop fence, we instantly realized it was an earthquake.

Letter to the editor: Governor right to reject S.105

Posted on May 31, 2018 |
By Graydon B. Stevens

I want to thank Gov. Scott for vetoing S.105. I also thank all of the individuals, businesses and organizations who supported VOGA (Vermont Outdoor Guide Association, of which I am executive director) in our movement against it. We had 76 businesses including nine statewide organizations sign our letter to Gov. Scott and many sent their own letters urging him to veto this waiver busting bill.

S.105 was a regulation regarding consumer justice enforcement and prohibited unconscionable terms in contracts.
