Clippings: Bracing for another new challenge

Posted on April 11, 2013 |
By John Flowers

As I get older, I’m beginning to think my body has been wired backward. Either that, or it’s true what they say about the advancing years becoming a second childhood.

How else can I explain the onset of some health-related maintenance needs that should have manifested themselves when I was a lot younger?

First, my body waited until adulthood before telling me that I “needed” the mumps. I guess it was Mother Nature’s way of having a good laugh at my expense. Kids look cute with chipmunk cheeks; adults — not so much.

Around the Bend: Bring on the zombie apocalypse

Posted on April 11, 2013 |
By Jessie Raymond

I know zombies are hot in popular culture right now, but until Sunday night, when I caught part of a Discovery Channel documentary — with the not-at-all alarming title “Zombie Apocalypse” — I had no idea that zombies posed an actual threat.

The zombies I know from TV, movies and video games are undead humans who stagger around looking for live brains to eat. They don’t generally move very quickly or with much precision and their enunciation is poor at best. But what they lack in agility they make up for in perseverance.

Ways of Seeing: Use these five points to get the best from your yoga

Posted on April 11, 2013 |
By Joanna Colwell

While many people find themselves in yoga class because their doctor advised it as a natural way to lower blood pressure or relieve an aching back, the real purpose of yoga is to achieve the blissful state of awakening known as Samadhi.

The language of yoga is Sanskrit, the sacred language of India. Akin to the place of Latin and Greek in Europe, Sanskrit is an ancient, refined and ritual language. In the branch of yoga that I study, all postures have a Sanskrit name, and seasoned students learn these names and the postures they stand for.

Clippings: They peek when François sings

Posted on April 4, 2013 |
By Karl Lindholm

Clippings by Lindholm MLK9991.jpg

I have a favorite moment at Middlebury College basketball games. It’s when François Clemmons begins to sing the National Anthem.

I dreaded the Anthem when I was an athlete. I was ready to play the game. Starters had been announced and were out on the playing surface, tense, excited, full of adrenaline. Let’s go!

Then we had to wait, often for a scratchy recording, sometimes for a live singer, who sang at a funereal pace.

Greg Dennis: In quary photos, Vermont rediscovered

Posted on April 4, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

We are surrounded by marble and granite, so much so that we rarely give it a thought. Much of the state is made of the stuff, our mountains and courthouses and old inns.

Marble and granite are among our most famous exports. When we see TV images of the U.S. Supreme Court and the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, we are looking at pieces of Vermont.

What happens, though, when we see the stone itself as art?

Ways of Seeing: Holding a piece of history is a thrill

Posted on April 1, 2013 |
By By Rebecca Kneale Gould

One of Middlebury College’s best-kept secrets is its fabulous archive in the Special Collections rooms of the library. And one of the best-kept secrets in Special Collections is a copy of Henry David Thoreau’s Walden that Thoreau himself owned and used. Although his emendations are relatively few, they show us the Writer in Action, combing through his own work with care. Depending on what you count, there are about 18 adjustments that Thoreau makes to this edition, all of which appear in the multiple later editions of Walden that grace my bookshelves.

Jessie Raymond: School sports take a toll on parents

Posted on March 28, 2013 |
By Jessie Raymond

If your kids play sports, you know only too well the pain of bleacher fatigue, or, as it is known in medical journals, gluteus maximus agonius.

The prolonged sitting on pullout bleachers for sporting events causes numbness of the backside, an ache in the lower back and stiff knees and hips. (In colonial America, rule-breakers were originally forced to sit for hours on a set of bleachers in the town square. The stocks and pillory were adopted only after bleachers were deemed “intollerably crewell.”)
