Politically thinking: Obama very strong in ‘bubbles'

Posted on November 29, 2012 |
By Eric Davis

Election results released by the Secretary of State’s office show that President Obama won eight communities in Vermont with more than 80 percent of the vote. His best town was Norwich, with 85 percent. The other places on the list are Marlboro, Putney, Brattleboro, Burlington, Montpelier, Strafford and Granville. Middlebury and Ripton, with 78 and 79 percent for Obama, came close to being on the list, but did not quite make the elite league.

Between The Lines: Kitchen confidential and the eating season

Posted on November 29, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

Tis the season for eating. And therefore, tis also the season for cooking.

I can’t help but notice that my favorite cooks (i.e., anyone willing to make me a meal) have particularly strong preferences when it comes to how things are done in their kitchen.

A kindly woman can turn ferocious when guarding her kitchen. Not even a glass of water may be filled within the confines of her kingdom without permission, lest the wrong glass be filled or water be drawn from the tap when there’s filtered water on hand.

Science & the Brain: You don’t know what you got till it’s gone

Posted on November 21, 2012 |
By Hannah Newman

Editor’s note: On this Thanksgiving week, here’s a story that brings a message of being thankful for what we have. Hannah Newman is a Middlebury College senior who has been writing neuroscience-related pieces for the Addison Independentfor the past two years. While this story is about a condition called prosopagnosia, it also has a personal message to fit the occasion.

Clippings: Job creation not exactly Job One

Posted on November 21, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

The impending demise of Hostess Brands Inc. is good for a few cheap laughs.

To start with, Hostess’s signature product, the Twinkie, is inherently funny. It has been theorized that only rats, cockroaches and Twinkies would survive the end of the world as we know it. My niece Carrie forwarded a George Takei tidbit about a looming December prediction of doom and noted the timing of Twinkies’ demise: “Well played, Mayans.”

Clippings: Timber! The making of a movie

Posted on November 15, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

I finally made it on the big screen.

But it’s not as I once imagined.

And, to be honest, this ‘big screen’ isn’t all that big. Rather than appear in some cameo spot on the movie screen (a la Sen. Patrick Leahy’s roles in the Batman movies), my two-minute gig generally shows up on a smart phone or computer screen. But at least I’m the star, albeit in a saga that takes a turn for the worse.

Here’s the setting:

Politically Thinking: Democrats showed remarkable reach

Posted on November 15, 2012 |
By Eric Davis

The Vermont Democratic Party had the strongest performance in its history in last week’s election.

President Obama won 67 percent of the vote in Vermont, his third-best showing in the nation. Only the District of Columbia and Hawaii gave the president a higher vote share than Vermont. Obama won all 14 of Vermont’s counties, including traditionally Republican areas in northern Vermont.

Between the Lines: The election and deja vu

Posted on November 15, 2012 |
By Greg Dennis

Has anybody else noticed that it’s the 1960s again?

We’re trying to wind down an unpopular war.

The voices of blacks, women and young voters are louder than ever.

Last week, two states approved the use of marijuana just for fun. Three states voted to approve same-sex marriage.

Gays can now serve openly in the military and have increasingly prominent roles in business and government. Wisconsin just elected the first openly gay U.S. senator.

The Outside Story: Some thoughts on ’12 foliage season

Posted on November 12, 2012 |
By John Burk

Many enjoy New England’s fall foliage for its aesthetics alone, and with good reason: It’s a spectacle that draws visitors from around the world. However, the unique progression of each foliage season also provides careful observers with insight related to forest health and short- and long-term climate.

Clippings: The election is over, please shut up

Posted on November 8, 2012 |
By John McCright

I was driving into work on the morning after the election and I heard a Republican strategist on the radio asked about how the GOP needs to change to build a coalition that can win a presidential election. The guy stammered about Republican governors and the House of Representatives for a few minutes, then admitted that he didn’t know.

A pundit admitting that he didn’t know! I let out a big sigh; what a relief.
