Opinion: Drivers: Activate signal before turning

Posted on October 6, 2016 |
By Peter Grant

It would be better if drivers used turn signals properly, which means turning them on before you turn. I keep having a car in front of me slow down with brake lights and wondering what are they about to do.

Can I pass them? Will they do whatever they want to do soon. Do I need to get out to help them?

No, they then start to turn, which answers the question. Then they turn on turn signals, as if that added anything.

Opinion: Addison-3 candidate seen as fiscally responsible

Posted on October 3, 2016 |
By Beverly Biello

Dear friends and neighbors in Addison 3: It’s time for an alternative to Diane Lanpher. As a 4-term incumbent and part of the Shumlin/Democrat machine for the last six years, Diane has consistently voted for increased taxes and unnecessary regulations, all of which are stifling our economy, making Vermont unaffordable for many and driving people out of Vermont (if they could sell their houses). For those of us who have had enough of Diane’s voting record, there is real hope of replacing her with a different woman — Monique Thurston.

Opinion: Incumbent senator a good listener, public servant

Posted on October 3, 2016 |
By Marianne Manning

I am writing in support of Claire Ayer’s bid for re-election to the Vermont State Senate. I have known Claire for over thirty years. She is a smart, compassionate, concerned citizen, committed to serving her community. As a member of Bridport Grange, I have attended numerous Legislative Breakfasts and Ag Luncheons held in Bridport. Claire has impressed me by her ability to listen, to see both sides of a controversial issue, to research and then to rationally explain her views, without losing her cool.

Opinion: New patent act needed to protect firms, consumers

Posted on October 3, 2016 |
By Sen. Patrick Leahy

This week’s writer is U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont.

It is hard to believe that 15 years ago this past Sunday the Twin Towers fell, smoke from the Pentagon could be seen from miles away, and a plane went down in a Pennsylvania field. For those who lived through that horrible day, the memory still feels fresh.

Jessie Raymond: Painting proves to be a job with no end

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

It wasn’t supposed to be this complicated.

My husband has been working on our house, and it was time for me to do my part: the painting. It’s not because I’m the better painter; it’s because I hate painting slightly less than he does, and because it’s the only renovation-related work I can help with.

Ways of Seeing: Don't forget the faces of war and children

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Johanna Nichols

A Letter to Omran, September 12, 2016

I remember the poster from 1967of a sunflower on yellow background with the simple words “War is not healthy for children and other living things.” It became a logo for the organization Another Mother for Peace. It comes to mind when I look at a newspaper clipping posted on my refrigerator.

Victor Nuovo on Spinoza: The Passions

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s note: This is the seventh in a series of essays on Dutch philosopher Benedict Spinoza.

I begin with a reminder of some themes from the previous essays. According to Spinoza, Nature is the only thing that can rightfully be said to exist, because it depends on no other thing but itself, whereas whatever else there is depends on it and inheres in it. It is the only substance; all other things are modes or finite modifications of it, just as a simple tune or a symphony are modes of music, not the thing itself.

Opinion: 'Black Lives Matter' movement has solid reasoning

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By Mary Kay Schueneman

Black Lives do Matter. While scrolling through my Facebook feed, I came across the report from WCAX that the Black Lives Matter Flag recently raised at the University of Vermont Campus by the Student Government was stolen during the night of Sept. 24. This is disturbing. But what is more deeply disturbing is the array of racist and intolerant comments made on the WCAX link to the story.

Opinion: Learning a lesson from Finland

Posted on September 29, 2016 |

Finland is a star in the educational world. To catch up on Finland’s work, I was recently reading Pasi Sahlberg’s book on the Finnish education system, titled “Finnish Lessons 2.0: What Can the World Learn from Educational Change in Finland?”

Opinion: Immigration and population grown are intertwined

Posted on September 29, 2016 |
By David Van Vleck

Immigration And Population Growth

“Immigration” is the main reason Britons are leaving the E.U.; “Immigration” is also the main concern of Americans supporting Trump. “Immigration” is a natural concern for any nation that wishes to control its future. The U.S. used to allow 400,000 immigrants annually; that number has increased drastically to an unknown level, unknown because of the many illegals involved.
