Letter to the editor: Affordability issue to blame for declining birth rates

Posted on March 4, 2019 |
By Mariah McGill

In his Feb. 14 letter in the Addison Independent, Lowell Nottingham is correct that Vermont and the rest of the country are experiencing a sharp decline in birth rates. However, he is incorrect that there are “no realistic options available to deal with the dropping birth rate.”

Letter to the editor: Shelley sonnet hits close to home

Posted on March 4, 2019 |
By James Morisseau

Certainly many things are better than they were 200 years ago when P.B. Shelley wrote this sonnet, but it still hits too close to home.

England in 1819

An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying King;

Princes, the dregs of their dull race, who flow

Through public scorn,—mud from a muddy spring;

Letter to the editor: Bill would advance Catholic doctrine

Posted on March 4, 2019 |
By Peter Grant

Am I the only one bothered by the Catholic Bishop trying to influence the legislature to pass a bill favorable to Catholic religious beliefs? Our nation was established to allow all to believe as they wish, which is called freedom of religion, which is in our Constitution (look it up). This means that Catholics may believe what they want to believe and all other citizens may believe what they want to believe and these beliefs can be different from each other and no law may be made to force one group to believe what another willingly believes.

Letter to the editor: State must invest in problem solving

Posted on March 4, 2019 |
By Richard Butz

My wife and I and two of our friends attended a Vermont legislative budget hearing on Monday, Feb. 25, in Winooski. I was there to testify regarding carbon reduction strategies: weatherization and the application of all VW settlement funds to electrification of our transportation sector. But we all came away with a new realization of the challenges we face in Vermont and difficulties our legislators face as they try to construct a budget.

In addition to “my” issue we heard heartfelt pleas regarding funding for:

Letter to the editor: Another view on plastic bags issue

Posted on March 4, 2019 |
By Arnold C. Gale

When we have something that is economically easy to use and inexpensive, always people who will not dispose of it properly after use will want to curtail its use. Plastic bags, for now are very simple to use for a store clerk and the purchaser, a godsend over paper bags always tearing, dropping your purchases in the store, automobile or at home.

Paper bags are also a disposable problem.

Middlebury residents are incredibly fortunate to have Lorraine Morse as one of their choices for Addison Central School District Board.

Lorraine Morse has demonstrated a very strong sense of responsibility to our community with 20+ years of experience volunteering in our community; and 18 consecutive years specifically on the school boards from: Mary Hogan, UD3, Hannaford Career Center, Addison Central Supervisory Union Board, ACSD; not to mention all of the subcommittees and other added responsibilities.

Never Let Love Be All

Never let love be all, all the dreams fulfilled;

a life of constant joy will tire itself.

Moments of loving, heights of ecstasy

are islands in the ocean’s gentle swell.

Love’s no museum, filled with endless art,

the ancient masters that must not be touched.

The perfect picture, frozen in its frame

will fade, perfection will become a bore.

Only a fool will see his love as all,

Opinion: CVOEO financial classes help students, others weather difficulty

Posted on February 28, 2019 |
By Jan Demers

Demars, Jan.jpg

What you read in the news we see every day.

Andrew was on his way to earn a Ph.D. He had just graduated from college concentrating on Physical Biochemistry. He was also in a dangerous financial situation. His student stipend didn’t begin to enable him to make ends meet. Andrew began working with a CVOEO financial coach.

Ways of Seeing by Laurie Cox: Grandpa's writings add to his legacy

Posted on February 28, 2019 |
By Laurie Cox

Cox, laurie.jpg

My mother’s father, my Grandpa, was a tall, slender man with thin gray hair, usually wearing a flannel shirt unless the occasion called for more formality. He was born in Denmark in the 1880’s and immigrated to Seattle when he was 24. By the time I was old enough to be aware, he was retired, living on his own in a small house, my grandmother long passed away. Grandpa liked camping, classical music, and talking politics. Probably he had a range of interests I never knew; he died when I was thirteen.

Jessie Raymond: Triggering euphoria is no science

Posted on February 28, 2019 |
By Jessie Raymond

Listen to this: scritch, scritch, scritch; tap, tap, tap; tick, tick, tick.

Do those sounds give you chills? If they were actual ASMR triggers, they might.

Let me explain.

The first time I heard the phrase “ASMR trigger,” I frowned; I thought that only kicked in once I had met my deductible. As it turns out, ASMR has nothing to do with insurance. It stands for “autonomous sensory meridian response,” and all the cool people are looking to have theirs triggered.
