Jessie Raymond: One good goat deserves another

Posted on August 29, 2013 |
By Jessie Raymond

So we got another goat.

Kind of an odd choice for a family that has found one goat to be just slightly over their ideal Goats Per Household quotient.

But you can’t have just one goat, because goats are herd animals and want to be around their own kind. Years ago we took in three goats out of pity but now we’re down to one, and that’s a problem. Sure, Lucy’s been fine on her own this summer, but with winter coming we couldn’t bear the thought of her alone in the goat barn on long, cold, dark nights, with no one to play cribbage with.

Posted on August 22, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

Jeff Bezos hasn’t called. Neither has Warren Buffett.

Heck, the sports group that bought the Boston Globe for a song from the New York Times hasn’t even called, and I’m pretty sure they are out there seeking advice as to what to do next.

Eric Davis: Very low voter turnout possible in 2014

Posted on August 22, 2013 |
By Eric Davis

The November 2014 General Election in Vermont could turn out to be the election with the lowest turnout in several decades.

The Vermont Secretary of State’s Web site provides data on registered voters and turnout for all elections since 1974. The average turnout in Vermont for the 10 presidential elections from 1976 through 2012 was 70 percent of the registered voters. Vermont has consistently had one of the highest turnout rates in the nation in presidential elections. In part, this is because of the strongly civic-minded culture of the state.

Clippings by John McCright: Internet brings the world to your fingertips

Posted on August 15, 2013 |
By John McCright

The Internet really is making the world a smaller place. Years ago presidents and other world leaders could have extensive private lives that were truly private. Now, with the 24-hour news cycle and the World Wide Web enabling just about anyone to become a publisher, any idiot sitting in a small town in Vermont can find out more than he ever wanted to know about everyone from his neighbor to the most powerful people in the world.

Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. In Vermont, this holds especially true. Eric Davis: Newspapers confront big changes

By Eric Davis

The Burlington Free Press announced last week that it was laying off 13 employees, including five reporters, editors and photographers in the newsroom. Over the past decade, the Free Press’ weekday circulation has dropped by nearly half, from 50,000 to 26,000. Greg Dennis: Turning up the 'Summer Heat' on coal

Posted on August 8, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

It’s an impossibly beautiful summer morning in Vermont — and I’m leaving the state on the last Saturday of July to go sit in a dirty church basement in Providence, R.I.

My travel takes me south through the mountain towns of Jamaica and Townshend along Route 30. There’s a farmer’s market along the way, and in another town they’re getting ready for a parade.

On the shortcut through Brattleboro I pass the old ski jump on the edge of town, near signs protesting a skateboard park.
