Letter to the editor: Sharpe questioned about taxation; rep. responds

Posted on November 7, 2016 |
By Jodi Lathrop

In watching this election cycle I have three questions for Rep. David Sharpe that have not been answered.

Question One is simple. Are you a YES or a NO vote on any type of Carbon Tax?

Question Two is a bit more complex. Why did you vote yes on every tax and fee increase put before you in 2015 and 2016 legislative sessions? In case you forgot, allow me to refresh your memory. In 2015 you voted yes for $16 million in property tax increases in bill H.361.

Letter to the editor: Hurricane related to climate change

Posted on November 7, 2016 |
By Krista Karlson

Hurricane Matthew was not a natural disaster. It was not inevitable, coincidental or “unfortunate.” It was a human-caused disaster, and it’s time that we own up to it. On Oct. 4, southwestern Haiti was pummeled by 125 mph winds and heavy rain that desecrated entire cities and left more than 800 dead.

Gregory Dennis: Minter, Scott and old vs. new Vermont

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Take a close look at the governor’s race this year. You’re looking at two different Vermonts.

Old Vermont is Republican Phil Scott, the current lieutenant governor. He’s a state native, longtime legislator, owner of a construction company and the winningest ever race car driver at Thunder Road International SpeedBowl.

New Vermont is Democrat Sue Minter, from “away” but  a longtime state resident who got her first Vermont job with the Conservation Law Foundation, was a legislator and later ran VTrans.

Letter to the editor: Silent spring: Act 46 and local democracy

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Frank Bryan and Susan Clark

Residents in Starksboro, Lincoln, New Haven, Monkton, and Bristol will be voting Nov. 8 on whether to consolidate school governance under Act 46. It’s a polarizing issue, at a time when we’ve seen enough polarization at the national level to last a lifetime. As coauthors, we come together from the left and right to urge you to vote no. We think these communities can do better by stepping back to look at the big picture.

Letter to the editor: ANeSU unification to save schools, upgrade education

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Susan Bruhl

One of the many reasons we chose as a family to move to New Haven was the appeal of sending our kids to the very same school where their grandfather attended in the 1950s. There was a sense of stepping back in time to simpler days and holding on to important ideals — community, culture, tradition. Those ideals remain incredibly important, but the students who are attending schools in our communities have 21st century learning needs and problems that are increasingly more difficult to address by a single community.

Letter to the editor: Avoid fear, practice soothing, enjoy nature’s bounty

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

Fear is a 4 letter word.

Between now and the upcoming election and beyond, I am working on avoiding the trap of fear, “What if . . .?”

Isaac Penington, an English Quaker who lived from 1616 to 1679, once wrote, “Our life is love, and peace, and tenderness; and bearing one with another, and forgiving one another, and notlaying accusations one against another; but praying one for another and helping one another up with a tender hand.”

Letter to the editor: Bruhl would bring ‘good, smart, doable strategies’

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Tom Woodward

On Election Tuesday, I look forward to casting my vote for Taborri Bruhl. Beyond that, in the coming months and years, I genuinely look forward to having Taborri Bruhl represent me, my neighbors and my district (Addison-5) as state representative.

Letter to the editor: ANeSU office workers: Unification means efficiencies

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By BibbiJo Conner et. al

As employees of the ANESU Office of the Superintendent, we want to make our voices heard in the Act 46 Unification conversation.

Much has been said about how unification will benefit student learning. We’ll leave that up to the educators.

Some have spoken to the minimal cost savings the district will realize by becoming one. That’s for the business office to speak to.

Letter to the editor: Baser is proven leader and has earned a second term

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Joe Devall

What makes someone a good state representative? A person that listens, thinks, uses common sense, asks questions and works collaboratively with other members. Fred Baser possesses those traits. During Fred’s first term in the legislature he put forward a meaningful bill that would advance construction of workforce housing that is badly needed in our region and it gained bipartisan support.
