Letter to the editor: Border wall an ineffective answer to real problems

Posted on December 31, 2018 |
By Peter Grant

We can be sure that someone has tried to tell Trump that the biggest entry to the U.S. of drugs and aliens will not be closed by a wall since that entry is right through our customs checking. There are too many trucks coming through our borders for customs officials to check more than a small percentage. So they guess which ones to check. Trucks that have drugs well hidden and trucks with humans cramped in hot, airless boxes seeking entry to the U.S.

It would cost a small percentage of his wall to train more customs agents for our borders.

On behalf of the Addison Central School District (ACSD) Board, thank you to everyone who participated in the Community Dialogue Meetings last month and submitted feedback to the board regarding our Facilities Master Planning process. Posted on December 31, 2018 |

Jane Kimble wrote a beautiful letter to the editor praising our Shakespeare It’s Elementary program. She did not however include the students and teachers from Salisbury Community School. They put in a huge amount of effort and support. The Town Hall Theater program included over 90 students from Salisbury, Ripton, Cornwall and Shoreham.

Letter to the editor: Draft dodger deserves no respect

Posted on December 31, 2018 |
By Alexander Lyall

Looking back, local Selective Service Boards spread the obligation. The 1960s draft seemed democratic and just. The burden was shared, although class introduced an element of inequity.

Along came an eligible lad with millions of dollars in his personal account. He could, as they did in the Civil War, buy his way out. Adjusted for inflation, father Trump made it happen ... a “medical” excuse, while the rest of us, the “others,” dug foxholes and slogged through the leaches and mud. We occupied body bags or considered the odds of shipment home.

Lessons in listening: Celebrating who we are and what we love in 2019

Posted on December 27, 2018 |
By Laura Wilkinson

Wilkinson, Laura.jpg

The light is slowly returning and the final days of 2018 are upon us. The festivities of December will be replaced by the quiet starkness of January. As much as I enjoy the rituals of the season, I welcome the opportunity to mirror the dormancy of the outer world with introspection. For many, this time also inspires hopefulness with the creation of New Year’s resolutions. As most resolutions tend to be grounded in health and wellness, the nurse practitioner/health coach in me feels obliged to add my two cents on this matter.

Ways of Seeing by Leeya Tudek: Time in Africa helps redefine beauty

Posted on December 27, 2018 |
By Leeya Tudek

Tudek, Leeya.jpg

How do you measure a woman’s beauty? Is it in how many compliments she receives? How many people are attracted to her? How many likes she gets on Instagram posts?

As a girl, “beautiful” can feel like a state you are expected to reach in order to fulfill your existence, and to matter.

Growing up, I became aware of this message from society incrementally. I noticed it while trying to find clothes that were nice looking and functional, and discovering that only boys get real pockets in their pants.

Eric Davis: Health care to be hot topic in 2020

Posted on December 27, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric May 2018.jpg

Health care is likely to be one of the most important issues in the 2020 presidential and congressional elections.

Earlier this month, a Texas federal district judge ruled that the entire Affordable Care Act (ACA) is unconstitutional. This decision will definitely make health care a more salient issue in 2019 and 2020.

The Mission Concert Committee of the Vergennes Congregational Church wishes to thank the many talented performers, sponsors and people of Addison County who made the 3rd annual mission concert on Sunday, Dec. 9, such a success.
