Sixth-generation farmer has agriculture in his blood

ORWELL — Brad Thomas walks around a field on his Jillian Acres farm off Route 73 West in Orwell, showing some visitors the cover crop he has planted on some of hay fields. Thomas milks cows and farms 465 acres in Orwell and 225 in Rutland County.

ORWELL — Drive the back roads of Addison County right now, and you’ll see acres and acres of plowed corn fields, giant clods of Addison County clay upturned, waiting for the cold and snow to break them into something more manageable, so that springtime harrowing can convert them into something like a seed bed fit for next year’s corn.

Historian to offer guided autumn hike in Orwell Oct. 11

ORWELL — History buffs and nature lovers alike are invited to enjoy a guided autumn trail ramble at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Historian Bill Powers and site interpreter Paul Andriscin will lead this hike, the last event of the state historic site’s 2015 season.

Orwell's only diner closes

ORWELL — The breakfast crowd at Pam’s Country Kitchen in Orwell found the pancakes to have a slightly bittersweet taste on Monday morning.

No, Pam LaDuc’s batter and the Vermont maple syrup were, as usual, on point.

It’s just that the regular customers — some of whom have been eating at the folksy diner on Main Street three or four times a week for more than a decade — knew that their go-to hub for good grub and gossip would be closing its doors for good after the last of Monday’s java had been drained from the pot.

Orwell's Louis Hall reflects on decades serving on the fire department, rescue squad

ORWELL — Orwell native and dairy farmer Louis Hall can’t exactly recall how he ended up on the Orwell Volunteer Fire Department 48 years ago. 

“I really don’t remember how I got started,” said Hall, now 71. “I joined in ’67, and I don’t remember if somebody asked me. It wasn’t one of those things where I had a burning desire all my life. I just joined.”

Mt. Independence to re-enact actions of 1776 battles

ORWELL — The summer and fall of 1776 during the American Revolution was a time of high drama on Lake Champlain and Mount Independence in Orwell. On Saturday, July 25, at 2 p.m. the Mount Independence State Historic Site gets out the time machine for the program, “An Investigation Into the Revolutionary Mind: What Were You Thinking, Benedict Arnold and Guy Carleton?”

Mount Independence State Historic Site offers Sunday program

ORWELL — The Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell on Sunday, July 5, will honor the American withdrawal from the Mount on July 5-6, 1777, with a program starting at 1 p.m. The public is invited to participate in reading American, British, and German period writings from June and July 1777 that chronicle this critical time in the American Revolution’s Northern Campaign.

Orwell photographer charged with sexually assaulting a young girl

MIDDLEBURY — A professional photographer in Orwell pleaded innocent on Monday in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, to several child-related sex crimes — including the alleged aggravated sexual assault of a family member younger than 13.

Town Meeting Recap 2015: Orwell

ORWELL — Orwell residents approved school and municipal budgets, elected town and school officials on Town Meeting Day and, on the preceding evening, decided a number of items at the annual town meeting.

The proposed school spending plan for the next fiscal year passed by voice vote. The plan comes to $1,809,406, a 5.5 percent increase from the $1,709,645 approved last year.
