2016 Orwell Town Meeting Wrap Up

Posted on March 3, 2016 |
By Addison Independent

ORWELL — Officials in Orwell expected a lot more discussion on a proposal to spend $160,000 on a new town truck than they got at Tuesday morning’s town meeting. But after folks asked a few questions about whether the old one could be fixed (too expensive, they were told) and if townspeople would be called on in the next year or two to put some money into vehicle replacement for the fire department or rescue squad (yes, that is quite likely), they approved the special allocation for a tandem dump truck to replace an 11-year-old truck currently used by the Orwell road crew.

2016 Orwell Town Meeting Preview

ORWELL — Town officials in Orwell shouldn’t have to field a lot of questions about the municipal budget proposal they are putting before voters at town meeting next Tuesday morning, but another item on the town meeting warning will likely draw a good deal of discussion.

Editor’s note: In this past Monday’s edition we featured a story on a local dairyman who is using a newer technique called no-till farming. Here we present a picture of the farmer himself.

By GAEN MURPHREE

ORWELL — Brad Thomas walks around a field on his Jillian Acres farm off Route 73 West in Orwell, showing some visitors the cover crop he has planted on some of hay fields. Thomas milks cows and farms 465 acres in Orwell and 225 in Rutland County.

ORWELL — Drive the back roads of Addison County right now, and you’ll see acres and acres of plowed corn fields, giant clods of Addison County clay upturned, waiting for the cold and snow to break them into something more manageable, so that springtime harrowing can convert them into something like a seed bed fit for next year’s corn.

ORWELL — The breakfast crowd at Pam’s Country Kitchen in Orwell found the pancakes to have a slightly bittersweet taste on Monday morning.

No, Pam LaDuc’s batter and the Vermont maple syrup were, as usual, on point.

It’s just that the regular customers — some of whom have been eating at the folksy diner on Main Street three or four times a week for more than a decade — knew that their go-to hub for good grub and gossip would be closing its doors for good after the last of Monday’s java had been drained from the pot.

ORWELL — Orwell native and dairy farmer Louis Hall can’t exactly recall how he ended up on the Orwell Volunteer Fire Department 48 years ago.

“I really don’t remember how I got started,” said Hall, now 71. “I joined in ’67, and I don’t remember if somebody asked me. It wasn’t one of those things where I had a burning desire all my life. I just joined.”
