The Addison selectboard on Oct. 2 agreed to support the new Byway, and on Oct. 23 the Vergennes city council also came on board.

PANTON — Panton selectmen have in recent months been overseeing a number of projects to town properties, many to completion.

The most prominent, paving of much of Panton Road, was completed prior to their Oct. 2 meeting. The town also was set to review bids on Oct. 3 for an upgrade of the Dead Creek Bridge, but that meeting was rescheduled.

The highway department also improved a stretch of West Road and installed surveillance cameras at the town garage to help deal with what town officials called persistent theft problems.

Tax bills on the way to Panton property owners

PANTON — Many, but not necessarily all, Panton homeowners should see lower tax bills when they open the envelopes this week, according to town treasurer M’Lissa Dayton.

Because Panton has just completed a town-wide reappraisal and individual assessments have changed, Dayton said maybe not all taxpayers will see bills asking for lower payments, half of which are due on Nov. 1 and May 1, respectively.

“They (the results) will vary, and you will be getting them shortly,” she said.

PANTON — Over the past 17 years many Panton residents have sat on the town’s selectboard, while town debates have focused on how to fund needed work on Panton Town Hall, how to word new town plans and zoning laws, and how to get a handle on rising tax rates.

But there has been one constant during those years: Sue Torrey has served as Panton Town Clerk and greeted residents and other visitors in the office nestled in the town hall basement.

PANTON — Panton Town Hall’s cupola will soon be removed to allow badly needed new roofing to be installed on the historic building, but a major donation has offered more hope that the cupola can be eventually put back in place.

Panton selectmen last Tuesday accepted not only a $35,000 bid from the McKernon Group to remove the cupola and repair the leaky roof on the 1857 structure, but also a $10,000 anonymous gift toward the cupola’s restoration and hoped-for return to its town hall perch.

PANTON — Panton selectmen believe they may have found a way to remove the cupola from atop Panton Town Hall, and keep it, too, while allowing the building’s roof to be fixed.

The board had been wrestling with the problem of what to do with the cupola after residents voted at a Sept. 7 special meeting against borrowing $40,000 to fix the deteriorating cupola as part of a larger project to repair the building’s leaky roof.
