McKibben wins $100k environmental award, pledges half to college — if it divests

RIPTON — Author and activist Bill McKibben on Tuesday was awarded the $100,000 Sophie Prize, one of the world’s largest environmental awards, for his work in building 350.org, the first widespread global climate campaign.

The Norway-based prize jury cited McKibben for “pioneering new methods of social protest,” from Internet-based organizing to the widespread civil disobedience confronting the Keystone XL pipeline. Past recipients of the award include Nobel laureate Wangari Mathaai and Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew.

Halpern and her therapy dog give insight into aging

MIDDLEBURY — She’s been visiting Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center (HPHRC) just about every Tuesday for more than three years, but the senior residents still line up for her arrival, hoping to get some eye contact and a handshake or two. No need for an exchange of words.

Not that the celebrity in question can speak in complete sentences; her vocabulary is confined to the occasional “woof.”

North Branch students deliver self-written play with philosophical theme

RIPTON — Theater enthusiasts will have an opportunity to witness a “Mad World” at the Ripton Community House this weekend. “Mad World” is the name of the original play that the North Branch School students have written and will perform twice, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13.

Ripton eyes new school roof with solar panels

RIPTON — Ripton voters on Town Meeting Day will be asked to spend up to $150,000 to put a new roof on their elementary school. And in a separate vote on the same day, they’ll be asked to add to that new roof 200 solar panels in order to generate electricity to reduce the school’s energy bill for at least the next 20 years.

Rep. Willem Jewett picked as House majority leader

MIDDLEBURY — Rep. Willem Jewett, D-Ripton, will have an even higher leadership profile in the Vermont House of Representatives during the next two years. The five-term incumbent lawmaker representing Addison-2 was unanimously elected by his fellow Democrats at their Dec. 8 caucus to serve as House majority leader when the Legislature reconvenes this January.

Jewett, 49, takes over from former House Majority Leader Lucy Leriche of Hardwick, who did not run for re-election. Jewett served the last two years as House majority whip.

Previous owners return to their roots at Ripton's Chipman Inn

RIPTON — Joan and Chris Bullock thought they had bid adieu to the Chipman Inn in 1986 following a successful, 8-year stint owning and operating the historic lodging facility off  Route 125 in Ripton. They had a nice run, but the long hours of cooking and cleaning had taken their toll.

Joan Bullock recalled often serving “last call” at the inn’s small pouring station in the wee hours, then grabbing a few hours of sleep before descending the stairs to the kitchen by 6 a.m. to get breakfast ready for her lodgers.

After winning re-election, Rep. Jewett plans run for majority leader

RIPTON — Rep. Willem Jewett, D-Ripton, comfortably won his contest for a fifth consecutive term representing the Addison-2 House district, defeating independent challenger Tim Ryan by a 1,400-882 margin in voting on Tuesday.

And after the ballots were counted, Jewett confirmed to the Addison Independent that he will run for the post of House Majority Leader when his party caucuses on Dec. 8. Jewett currently serves as House Majority Whip. Democrats maintained their sizable majority in the Vermont House amid heavy voter turnout in the Nov. 6 General Election.

Record number of runners drawn to 25th annual Ripton race

RIPTON — A huge crowd turned out to celebrate the 25th annual Ripton Ridge Run on Oct. 7. A record 230 people took part in the 5K run, fun walk and 10K run. Fifteen children participated in the “Kids’ Race” and dozens of volunteers and friends were also on hand.

The Bud Leeds Ensemble provided music, giving the day a particularly festive atmosphere and, since the weather also cooperated, it was a banner day.
