4-year-old inspires his grandpa to quit

Editor’s note: This article is the second of a three-part series on Addison County residents who have sought help from the Quit Tobacco Program at Porter Hospital in order to kick their cigarette habits.

MIDDLEBURY — Wally Bailey, 62, of Salisbury was only six years old when he smoked his first cigarette.

“At that point, I must have seen people smoke,” Bailey said. “My parents didn’t smoke. No one in my family smoked. I just thought it was cool, I guess.”

Bailey’s friend would steal packs of cigarettes from his parents and the two would smoke them together in secret.

Maple Meadow sees increased demand for locally raised eggs

ADDISON COUNTY— Throughout the country, consumers have become more cautious in the wake of a salmonella outbreak that sickened some 1,000 people and affected upwards of half a billion eggs from two Iowa producers.

The larger chicken farms in the United States can expect lasting repercussions and tightened safety standards, but the recall may have unexpected benefits for local egg producers. Jackie Devoid, who with her husband, George, owns Maple Meadow Farm in Salisbury, said that there’s been an increased interest in her family’s eggs since the recall.

Dry spring weather keeping bugs at bay

SALISBURY — A relatively dry, cool spring has helped limit Addison County’s mosquito population, but those charged with battling the bugs warned that just one substantial rainstorm could unleash a massive swarm of the pesky bloodsuckers.

“Things are going pretty well,” Jon Turmel, the state’s entomologist, said last Wednesday. “I usually get calls when things get bad, and I haven’t had one call.”

Salisbury school votes 'no' on Leicester merger

SALISBURY/LEICESTER — The Salisbury Community School board has voted to end discussions of consolidation between Leicester and Salisbury’s elementary schools.

The Nov. 12 decision brought a definitive end to Leicester’s latest bid to solve ongoing concerns about the future of its K-6 elementary school. Faced with an aging building and rising maintenance costs, as well as a relatively small student population, Leicester has been pursuing consolidation options for several years.
