Matt Dickerson: Following a beeline through snowy woods

Posted on December 1, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

Just 40 yards from my stand, the tracks cut across the lumber trail I was walking along. They were too big to miss even in the dim light of dawn.

Bee thief. Honey stealer.

Black bear.

The tracks, left in three inches of heavy wet snow, were still distinct and fresh. Probably less than an hour old, I thought.

Five subsequent thoughts then crossed my mind, in the following order, I think.

Thought No. 1: This is really cool. It would be even cooler to actually see a bear. I hadn’t seen a bear in Vermont in two years.

Andy Kirkaldy: Thankful for the joy of teamwork

Posted on November 22, 2016 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

It’s still a little close to Nov. 8 to feel thankful right now, but strangely enough sports helps, particularly the team sports I have always played and followed and enjoyed.

The most successful teams have consistent rules that apply to all equally, assign roles solely based on merit, value individual quirks and differences for what they can contribute to the whole, foster trust and respect among their members, and fare best when they achieve that elusive “chemistry,” when all are willing to sacrifice for the greater good and to support their teammates.

Matt Dickerson: A lot of work for one trout

Posted on October 27, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

It started in Indiana in February. Friday afternoon speaking at one university, and Monday morning at another. It made little sense to come home in between, so I spent Saturday trying to get caught up on work and writing. And on Sunday I found a guide to take me steelhead fishing on a small tributary to Lake Michigan.

Matt Dickerson: Of fishing, walking, reading and writing

Every once in a while, several stray strands of thought wind together in my mind — like fur, feathers, thread and a sharp metal hook that turn into a fly.

“’Ello Guv-nah.”

Time to check in with the Northeast Kingdom’s favorite son, Bill Lee, who has been much in the news lately: front page stories in the Boston Globe, Burlington Free Press, Seven Days, and a guest appearance on NPR’s “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me.”

Matt Dickerson: Redemption at Brighton State Park

Posted on September 29, 2016 |

The last time I was in the town of Island Pond, Vt., my car fell into a ditch.

It was not the kind of ditch that runs beside the road. It was the sort that runs straight across a gravel road after a bad flood: a washout, about four feet across and two and a half feet deep with vertical sides. It crossed the road at the top of the rise in a saddle of land, which also made it the sort of ditch you don’t see until your car is almost on top of it, when it is already too late to stop.

Coytoe and cactus5439.JPG

My wife and I went to a museum last week. It was called a museum, anyway. But was more of a zoo, botanical garden, aviary and aquarium of native local plants and animals all rolled into one. And it was mostly outdoors.

Andy Kirkaldy: More questions than answers for AL East teams

Posted on March 31, 2016 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Corey Buxton asked me last week what I thought about the Red Sox’s chances this year. To be honest, I said, I hadn’t really sized it up.

But then I rattled off, well, is pitcher Clay Buchholz going to make it through the year healthy? Were the end-of-the-season surges by fellow hurlers Joe Kelly and Rick Porcello last year for real, or are they going to be mediocre again (or worse)? How healthy is Eduardo Rodriguez, and can he build on his strong rookie season as a starting pitcher?

Matt Dickerson: Coming home

My older brother Ted just visited me from Alaska.

All three of my brothers enjoy outdoor activities. They have all done some camping, hiking and fishing. But Ted is my brother who enjoys outdoor recreation the most. Perhaps even more than I do. Like me he grew up in small town New England and was raised on fishing and camping trips with our father in northern Maine.

Karl Lindholm: Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee

Muhammad Ali was a dancer.

He danced in the ring, light as a feather, sticking and moving, bobbing and weaving, avoiding blows, floating as if on air, stinging his earth-bound plodding adversaries, mere mortals, beating them up, knocking them down and out, in a world of hurt.

Ironic, isn’t it. Such grace of movement, such beauty of physical expression really, in service to violence and pain. Ali wanted to knock you out: his end, his purpose, was your end.
