Karl Lindholm: An enterprise of the Spirit: Why play?

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Karl Lindholm

Lindholm, Karl ONLINE.jpg

I am playful when I ski (and I rarely am in everyday life). I sing when I ski — the tune dictates my speed and rhythm.

I feel weightless in heavy boots and skis attached — and heavy winter clothing covering my whole body. I almost fly when I ski.

Matt Dickerson: Haunted fishing memories

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Matt Dickerson

I had just finished my best ever day of steelhead fishing and I was in the pickup truck with my guide Ryan driving back to town. I commented that days like I’d just had must get him a lot of repeat clients. It wasn’t idle banter. I was already trying to figure out when and how I might get back to that river, and I knew that Rain Coast Guides had already nearly booked most of March of 2019 more than a year in advance.

Ryan laughed. No, he said. It isn’t necessarily the great days that bring clients back. Often, it’s the lousy days.

Andy Kirkaldy: Tigers enjoyed rare advantage; N.Y. over Boston

Posted on March 15, 2018 |
By Andy Kirklady

Time for a couple thoughts appropriate for the season. (Late winter? Early spring? March Madness?)

One of the arguments I have made to the Vermont Principals’ Association (fruitlessly) over the years in favor of having a smaller athletic Division I for Vermont High Schools is that about 10 or 12 of the big schools have not only an enrollment advantage over the smaller D-I schools, but better access to facilities and clubs.

Matt Dickerson: Steelhead fishing and the Olympics

Posted on March 8, 2018 |
By Matt Dickerson

Matt Dickerson Olympic steelhead_5986 online.jpg

A brisk wind blew off the Puget Sound. I stood on the third deck of a state-run ferry, looking west at distant snow-covered peaks of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Shades not unlike those of an October sugar maple accented the backdrop as the sun fell into the Pacific. Then my shivering got the better of me. I stepped out of the wind and into the warmth of the ferry’s enclosed deck to enjoy the view through a thick glass.

Karl Lindholm: A century of hoop at Middlebury College

Posted on March 1, 2018 |
By Karl Lindholm

Miske Daly with Lindholm col.jpg

Basketball, unlike our other major sports, has an actual creation story: our Canadian friend, Dr. James Naismith, really did invent basketball in the gym at the Springfield (Mass.) YMCA in 1891.

Only 27 years after Naismith nailed those peach baskets up in the Y, Middlebury College had a basketball team and an intercollegiate schedule.

In that inaugural season, 1917-18, the Middlebury team was undefeated, playing six games, two each against UVM, Norwich, and Saint Michael’s, outscoring their state rivals, 200-83.

Alaska fishing guide returns to become a Vermont game warden

Posted on February 22, 2018 |
By Matt Dickerson

asa sargent.jpg

One of the things Asa Sargent had to learn when he left the Green Mountain State to spend four years as a guide in Alaska, was how to know when a charging brown bear was just bluffing.

It’s not a lesson one learns growing up in Ripton, Vt., so Sargent, now 26 years old, had to trust the wisdom of the experienced guide who trained him.

It also isn’t a skill that is likely to prove useful in his new career, as a Vermont State Game Warden. However other skills from his years guiding did transfer.

Andy Kirklady: Eagles were the smarter team on Super Sunday

Posted on February 7, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

The first thing that needs be said about Sunday’s Super Bowl is congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles and their fans.

As a former long-suffering Boston sports fan I know how those folks in Philly feel to see the end of a long drought: Iggles supporters, please enjoy the moment.

Second, the Eagles deserved to win what was an entertaining game. Usually the Patriots prevail, and deserve to do so, because they are the smarter, better-prepared team that makes fewer mistakes and better decisions.

Elysian Fields, Papa Karl, sports and kids

Karl Lindholm col Carys watching hoop.jpg

Last Saturday, I found myself in the Elysian Fields, or at least a reasonable contemporary facsimile thereof.

The Elysian Fields was the realm after death where heroes romp, according to the ancient Greeks.

Baseball fans know that the Elysian Fields was a real place too, a park in Hoboken, N.J., just across the Hudson from Manhattan, where the first recognized baseball game was played in 1846: The Knickerbocker club of New York City took on a team simply named the New York Nine (and lost 23-1).

Matt Dickerson: On the use of scarves and cross-country skiing in the cold

Posted on January 18, 2018 |
By Matt Dickerson

It was a perfect January day — the type of day during which I might wear a long wool scarf for the aesthetic, but I don’t really need one. The temperature hovered in the mid-20s. Fresh snow blanketed the ground. Most importantly, nearly all the trails at Rikert Nordic Ski Touring Center were once again open.
