How's the skiing on the other side of the fence?

An old and faded sign near the lodge listed the East Mountain trail as intermediate in difficulty. But for the past 20 minutes or so, every sign we passed had the more ominous “Most Difficult” designation. Given the rookie status of half our party, there were a few murmurings of concern. But we pressed on.

Snow, speed and a moment of hang time

I like to build sledding jumps. Even as a teenager, when I still took great delight in sailing through the air on all manner of gravity-propelled sliding devices, and would approach nearly any jump with little or no fear — even then I secretly thought that building jumps was as fun as using them.

A relic, a shrine, Hoop Heaven: a gym

What a coincidence!

I was in Maine visiting family last Saturday when the Middlebury basketball teams just happened to be in Lewiston to play against Bates College. So I decided to take in the men’s and women’s games (I actually watched Bates play Williams the night before, too).

Bates plays their basketball games in Alumni Gymnasium. Constructed in 1928, it’s the oldest New England college gym still hosting varsity basketball, and indeed one of the oldest such arenas in the country.

Enjoy woods, winter, friends in Vermont

This past Sunday my wife, Deborah, and I put on our cross-country skis for the first time of the new calendar year. Cross-country skiing is one of our favorite outdoor activities — one of the reasons we love winter in Vermont, and are often praying for snow.

But, although we did manage to get out on our skis over the Christmas break to wrap up 2010, not long after New Year’s Day along came the thaw and heavy rains, and all the lovely snow was washed way.

Remembering the past year

On Tuesday — when the last of our holiday visitors left, the obsolete work calendars found the recycling bin, and I remembered to start writing 2011 — the fact that it really is a new year hit home.

By the immutable law of journalism, that means it’s time for one last look at 2010.

First, these were the local champions (and a few other noteworthy performers):

Of snow, snowshoes,
beginnings and endings

It was Christmas Eve. The end of the year was approaching determinedly, unavoidably, quickly. But the day was lovely. The sun was up, and the temperature rose to the mid-20s — comfortable weather for snowshoes. Fresh powdery snow blanketed the woods.

What would Jesus do: Perfect Form

What indeed would Jesus do?

Jesus Shuttlesworth, that is. That’s the name of the character Ray Allen plays in the Spike Lee movie, “He Got Game.” It’s a compelling film, especially since the protagonist is played by a basketball player, not an actor. (Those with small hoop-crazed children might wait before ordering — it’s rated R.)

It’s Christmas, the season for gift giving. Or, if you’ve taken a trip to your mailbox lately and had to bring a wheelbarrow or small dump truck, you also know it as the season for catalogs.

Good day to root for my favorite teams

Monday proved to be a fine day to be a Boston sports fan, but only after plenty of drama.
Full disclosure: I spent the 1960s and most of the ’70s calling southeastern Massachusetts home. I developed a lifelong attachment to the Boston sports teams whether they were good — the Celtics and Bruins — or horrific — the Sox before 1967 and the Patriots for most of their existence.

Competition in the wild

I got to my tree stand 50 minutes before dawn, 20 before the legal start of the hunting day. I climbed up the tree, clipped my safety harness, pulled my rifle up, and sat down to wait and enjoy the woods in the predawn and dawn hours.
