Sox may win with motley 'deputation'

Posted on October 8, 2009 |

Watching the red Sox most nights this summer, I have concluded that they really are an “Anacharsis Clootz Deputation.”

Come to think about it, all sports teams are Anacharsis Clootz Deputations, more or less.
What in the world is an Anacharsis Clootz Deputation?

That’s how Herman Melville in “Moby Dick” described the multicultural crew on the ship, the Pequod: they were “from all the isles of the sea, and all the ends of the earth.”

It basically means a motley crew, in our everyday lexicon. Mostly, I like to say it: “Anacharsis Clootz Deputation.”

Vermont offers trophy fish of a different size

Over the past month, two all-tackle world records for trout have been broken, with the new records awaiting only official confirmation. A new world record rainbow trout was caught on Sept. 5 in Saskatchewan, Canada. The trout weighed a whopping 48 pounds. (Just pause and consider that weight for a moment. It’s about 5 pounds heavier than the largest king salmon I have ever caught in Alaska, and about six times bigger than the average weight of my kids at birth.)

Predictions are simply unpredictable

In “Rocky 3” (for my money the most entertaining flick in the series) reporters ask Clubber Lang, played by the inimitable Mr. T, for his view of his upcoming heavyweight title fight with Rocky Balboa.

His response: “My prediction? Pain.”

It remains the most accurate forecast in the history of real or fictional sporting events.

Fall changes in Vermont worth noting

The gifted songwriters Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist (collectively known as the band “Over The Rhine”), begin their song “Changes Come” with the simple observation, “Changes come / Turn my world around.”

Changes do come. I find the changes especially noticeable in the autumn. Weather changes. Daylight hours change — and in September they change rapidly. Our daily routines changes as vacations end and kids head back to school.

Of fathers, sons and their coaches

My son Peter is 14 and in the ninth grade. He has decided to play football this year on the Middlebury Union High School freshman team. I hope he’s a better player than I was.

My dad, Peter’s Granpa, was a genuinely good football player, captain of the 1934 Bates College team, when football was king on college campuses and players were Big Men on Campus. He is a member of the Maine State Football Hall of Fame, among other gridiron honors, and still attends Bates’ games in the fall, at age 98, when the weather allows. He loved the hurly-burly of the game.

Home: Somewhere over the rainbow

“There’s no place like home.”

That was the message from “The Wizard of Oz.” And what was true for Dorothy is sometimes also true of fishing. For all of the fun of traveling and exploring new fishing spots (like, for example, Alaska), there is something quite enjoyable about returning home to a favorite river — a river I know well, whose insect hatches I have fished, whose seasons and personalities I have become familiar with.

Playing field now more level for MUHS teams

Posted on August 27, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

This school year will see almost all Middlebury Union High School sports competing at the Division II level, with the exceptions being field hockey and both lacrosse teams.

Other Tiger athletic programs are already in D-II, including basketball, soccer and boys’ cross-country. Still other girls’ programs are now technically in D-I, but are in the process of being moved to D-II, according to MUHS activities director Sean Farrell. Because the numbers are within appeal guidelines, Farrell expects the Vermont Principals’ Association to OK the changes.

Alaska is big. It has lots of mountains. The mountains are big, too. So are the lakes and rivers. Enormous. Loads of them. Everywhere. As for the vast quantity of small and medium-size creeks, streams, lakes and ponds, it is hard to fathom until you come and take a look.

Fishing for halibut

I’m going to visit my brother Ted in Alaska. We’re planning to go fishing. I expect we’ll have an “adventure.” My trips with Ted seem to produce more adventure than we want.

There was the time he got me lost “guiding” me on a trip to a remote trout stream on a huge Maine lake that stretches for miles and has no houses. And the time he got me onto a glacier in the Rockies above the timberline and conjured up a hailstorm. These adventures with Ted sometimes leave me questioning his sanity. That I continue to go with him also leaves me questioning my own.

Legacy of a coach, husband and fisherman

It was a surprise when my sister married the football coach in 1969, given the gadabouts in her life before Jim. She was living and working as a photographer in Cambridge, Mass., a haven for rebels, radicals and rascals of all shapes and sizes at that strange time. Jim was coaching football at Harvard when they met and he was fishing a lot. All he had to his name were an old Land Rover and two canoes.
