VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their Tuesday meeting said they expected the March 18 “Community Visit” organized by the Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD) to produce a number of concrete proposals to improve the city for its residents.

Mayor Bill Benton said 111 residents on March 18 signed up for nine workshops moderated by the VCRD and attended by more than two-dozen high-ranking state and county officials and private-sector experts, while 90 residents sat down at a community dinner at St. Peter’s Church that evening.

VUHS facing tough budget questions with revote due

Posted on March 26, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

VERGENNES — Members of the Vergennes Union High School board discussed for two and a half hours Monday evening how to draft a budget that would be palatable to voters, but they did not reach consensus on how, or if, to cut spending. The board also could not find common ground on how to retire the deficit from last year, and a looming deficit at the end of this year.

“I think this problem is way bigger than what we can do in this room tonight,” board member Laurie Childers said. “We have a very serious problem.”

Vergennes foregoes city hall courtyard plan

Posted on March 17, 2014 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — After discussions over the past few months, the Vergennes City Council and the Friends of the Vergennes Opera House have agreed not to do a complete makeover of the front of Vergennes City Hall into a courtyard, a project that could have also included a bulbout.

City officials and the theater group could still cooperate on upgrading the theater’s standing marquee while the city focuses on fixing the sidewalk.

ADDISON COUNTY — There was a day when renting out VHS tapes was almost as good as printing cash, said Terry Pellegrino.

VERGENNES — When building a new home it is important that it is energy-efficient and has a light carbon footprint, said builder Ken Ruddy — but not because of the awards it can win (although Ruddy’s new home in Vergennes has been honored).

“It’s simple economics,” said the founder and owner of the North Ferrisburgh design/build company Fiddlehead Construction. “It pays for itself from day one.”
