Kennedy Brothers calls halt to retail

VERGENNES — Kennedy Brothers President Win Grant confirmed on Wednesday that he plans to end retail operations in his North Main Street, Vergennes, building after 50 years — for 41 of which he has overseen operations.

Grant, 67, said the move will affect Kennedy Brothers’ nine employees, two of whom are full-time, and 50 craft vendors, who rent between six and 50 square feet apiece in the building’s 10,000-square-foot marketplace.

Video to promote Bixby centennial

VERGENNES — Charlotte filmmaker Philip Fass has accepted and begun what he calls an exciting challenge from the Bixby Free Memorial Library Board of Trustees.

In the next 12 months, Fass, 58, plans to complete a 60-minute DVD that will not only express what the Bixby Library has meant to the five communities it has served since 1912, but also emphasize the central role the Vergennes institution can continue to play in the decades to come.

ANwSU nearing call for unification vote

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest Supervisory Union committee studying unification of the five-town district took no action at a Tuesday meeting, but reached a consensus that it will offer a positive review of potential one-board governance to the full ANwSU board on Nov. 17.

“It’s fair to say the committee is still very positive and feels that the unified union is a good match for our district,” said committee head Kristin Bristow after the evening meeting at Vergennes Union Elementary School.

Clark, Lanpher earn two more years

VERGENNES — Reps. Gregory Clark, R-Vergennes, and Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, retained their Addison-3 seats in the Vermont House of Representatives on Tuesday, turning back challenges from former GOP representative and former Vergennes mayor Thelma “Kitty” Oxholm and veteran Democratic candidate and area businesswoman Elizabeth Markowski of Ferrisburgh.

City mulls sewer discount for seniors

VERGENNES — At the Vergennes city council meeting this past Tuesday, aldermen discussed a suggestion by Deputy Mayor Randy Ouellette that the city offer senior citizens a discount on sewer bills.
In a Thursday interview, City Manager Mel Hawley said aldermen did not act, but indicated they might consider such a move in the future.
“That is something that is worthy of looking at it,” Hawley said.
One reason aldermen did not move immediately is because of an unknown expense in the sewer ledger — how much it will cost to remove sludge from the treatment plant’s septic lagoons.

VUHS optimistic about testing after efforts in, out of classrooms

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School Co-principal Ed Webbley said only time will tell if the VUHS juniors did well on New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) tests on Oct. 5, 6 and 7.

But school officials are optimistic that years of focus on improving test scores will pay off: VUHS teachers have coordinated their efforts at helping students whose classroom work has lagged, and the school sets aside time at midday to allow teachers to give extra time to students.

Sidewalk repairs won't dip into city taxpayers' pockets

VERGENNES — Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley last week said the project to repair the sidewalk and provide handicap access to businesses at the intersection of Main and Green streets should be complete by mid-November, at no direct cost to city taxpayers.

The project, which will also improve a bus stop and a sidewalk bulb-out at the intersection’s southeast corner, carries a total starting price tag of about $84,500, which Hawley said will be inflated by a few change orders.

City, Grist Mill owner reach deal

Parties happy with ANwSU deal

VERGENNES — Lead negotiators on both sides said in a joint interview last week that they are satisfied with the new, two-year Addison Northwest Supervisory Union teachers’ contract, which will expire in June 2012 and preserves teachers’ existing health-care benefits and base pay.

Negotiators reached agreement in an eight-hour mediation session in mid-August, and in late September both the Addison Northwest Teachers’ Association and the ANwSU board — which represents Panton, Waltham, Vergennes, Addison and Ferrisburgh — gave final approval.

Vergennes police adding Tasers; officials cite safety, cost benefits

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Police Department has joined a small, but growing, list of state law enforcement agencies to add Taser stun guns to their equipment lists.

Chief George Merkel said the department now owns two $1,000 Tasers, which he believes are a safer tool for subduing suspects than other options at police officers’ disposal — physical restraint, pepper spray or batons.

Merkel said enough people are now familiar with Tasers that even their potential use can defuse situations.
