VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Sunday cited a Ferrisburgh man not far from his Satterly Road home for driving under the influence of alcohol.

City police allege that they pulled over a vehicle driven by Lyn Billings, 53, because it failed to stay in its lane and Billings failed to use a turn signal when making a turn. They stopped the vehicle not far from the intersection of Routes 7 and 22A.

Vergennes police allege that Billings’ blood-alcohol level tested at 0.289, more than three-and-a-half times the legal limit for driving of 0.08.

VERGENNES — At its meeting last Tuesday the Vergennes City Council continued to discuss with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church representatives how much of the tab the city should pick up for a Designated Downtown grant to replace the Park Street sidewalk.

That narrow sidewalk, in only fair condition and barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side, runs past the city bandstand on one side and along church property on the other.

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents on Tuesday strongly backed a 20-year, $500,000 bond to support the purchase of a new pumper truck for the Vergennes Fire Department. The vote was 401-96.

The new truck will replace a 24-year-old pumper that department leaders said is becoming unreliable and expensive to repair. City residents do not vote on the municipal budget; rather the city council will approve a budget at the end of June.

When you imagine a meal in a Laundromat it’s not glamorous. Maybe you have a candy bar and a bottle of warm soda as you watch your clothes spin around, or perhaps a smashed hamburger from a fast food joint down the road. Either way, it’s not awesome.

That is, it wasn’t awesome until 2010, when Didier and Julianne Murat transformed the original Vergennes Laundromat at 7 Main St. into a French-inspired bakery.

Hawley, Mel copy 1.jpg

VERGENNES — It will be July 24, said Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley.

Hawley, 64, whose two tenures as city manager total more than three decades, had informed the Vergennes City Council months ago that he would be stepping down no later than August.

At the council’s Feb. 27 meeting Hawley finally pinned down a date — the council’s only meeting in July, which comes on the 24th. Typically he and City Clerk Joan Devine are reappointed at the beginning of the Vergennes fiscal year, which starts in July.

VERGENNES — Vergennes-area residents on Tuesday will weigh in on a $21.1 million Addison Northwest School District budget that reduces current spending by $10,000, eliminates three teachers and about four other full-time jobs, reduces the hours of two principals, and could raise residential school tax rates by about 8 cents in the five district towns — a year after rates dropped by more than that in three of them.
