Natural gas firm fights legislation

MONTPELIER — The state’s sole natural gas utility and a natural gas trucking company spoke out last week against bills aiming to limit the fossil fuel market, which they say would limit their ability to provide service to more Vermonters.

One of the bills, H.51, would ban new fossil fuel infrastructure with the aim of reducing the state’s reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. As Vermont does not have any oil pipelines, the bill targets natural gas.

Vermont State Police log: Chase leads to charges for Orwell motorist

ADDISON COUNTY — On Saturday, April 13, at around a quarter to 4 p.m., a Vermont State Police trooper saw a vehicle speeding on Route 7 in New Haven. The trooper clocked the car at 74 mph in a 50 mph zone and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to yield and the vehicle continued traveling southbound.

Police said the car entered the northbound lane on several occasions and put other motorists and his passenger at risk of serious bodily injury or death. The pursuit came to an end after several miles when the driver safely stopped his car.

After walk, climate activists intensify calls for action

MONTPELIER — At the conclusion of the five-day, 65-mile Next Steps Climate Solutions walk last Tuesday, Ashley Bolger and Clarissa Sprague visited Vermont House Speaker Mitzi Johnson in her Statehouse office and begged her to take action on climate change.

Speaker Johnson told them it was great to work in a state where people “really, really care” about the issue.

Veterans can get help at mobile center in Williston

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The South Burlington Vet Center and White River Junction Mobile Vet Center will be at the Home Depot in Williston on Thursday, April 25 from 3-7 p.m. to reach out to veterans in northern Vermont, including Addison County, and to offer information and services.

The Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Vet Center — known as the “MVC” — is a 35-foot "office on wheels” equipped with satellite communications hosting audio-visual equipment, encrypted phone and fax lines, computers and wireless internet.

A 65-mile walk across Vt. takes aim at climate change

MONTPELIER — Without a word, more than 300 climate justice activists filed into the Statehouse Tuesday afternoon. The youngest of them, carrying pussy willows, gathered in the center of the first-floor lobby, bathed in warm lamplight, and the rest filled in around them. Members of the press wove themselves into the group, too, jostling and beeping and clicking.

Once everyone had found their place, 600 hands shot into the air with a great swish of windbreaker and raincoat sleeves, and 3,000 fingers began to count down from 10.

Climate in the spotlight at legislative breakfast

WEYBRIDGE — While more than 200 hearty climate-change activists on Monday morning were battling rain, hail and wind during the final leg of their symbolic walk from Middlebury to the Statehouse in Montpelier, a much smaller group of citizens was meeting with local lawmakers in Weybridge to lobby for legislation aimed at reducing the state’s carbon footprint.

Turkey hunting season to begin April 27

MONTPELIER — It’s almost time for spring turkey hunting in Vermont. Youth spring turkey hunting weekend is April 27 and 28 this year, and the regular spring turkey season is May 1-31.

Vermont hunters took 5,878 turkeys during last year’s spring youth weekend and May seasons.

The April 27 and 28 youth turkey hunting weekend provides an excellent opportunity for experienced hunters to teach young hunters how to safely and successfully hunt wild turkeys.
