50,000 wild Vermont turkeys descend from just 31 birds

VERMONT — One of our native wildlife species historically played an important role on Thanksgiving Day. North America’s native wild turkeys were the ancestors of the Thanksgiving turkey on our dinner table.

Originally found only in the wild, turkeys now exist as meat-producing domesticated derivatives — the broad breasted white, broad breasted bronze, white Holland, bourbon red and a host of other breeds — all of them descended from our native wild turkey.

Sen. Sanders challenges students to write State of Union essays

BURLINGTON — U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has launched his seventh annual State of the Union essay contest, calling on Vermont’s high school students to address what they view as the major issues facing the U.S.

Last year, nearly 800 students from 39 Vermont high schools wrote essays detailing their own view of the “state of the union.”

Scott speeds to victory over Minter in governor’s race

VERMONT — Republican Phil Scott beat Democrat Sue Minter in the Vermont governor’s race with a surprisingly large spread, 53 percent to 44 percent, with 3 percent going to Liberty Union candidate Bill “Spaceman” Lee. Scott’s victory follows six years of Democrat Peter Shumlin in the state’s top office.

Forests and phosphorus reduction in Lake Champlain

ADDISON COUNTY — The Environmental Protection Agency has estimated that forest lands account for about 16 percent of the phosphorus going into Lake Champlain for the entire Vermont portion of the lake.

In the Otter Creek watershed, the watershed that covers most of Addison County, the figure is estimated to be just slightly higher, at 17.1 percent. This slightly higher number reflects the portion of the Otter Creek watershed that is forested, which the Department of Environmental Conservation gauges at around 60 percent.

Revisions of Vt. logging rules designed to meet goal for lake cleanup

ADDISON COUNTY — Revised regulations on voluntary logging practices designed to improve Lake Champlain water quality went into effect on Oct. 22 Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation (FPR) officials claimed most changes are minor and will have “minimal” impact on the logging sector. Libraries host pet health days

VERMONT — One Health is the concept recognizing that human health, animal health and the health of the environment are closely interrelated and thus should often be considered as a whole. The first celebration of One Health Day was this past Thursday, Nov. 3.

One Health Day is an international campaign aimed at bringing attention to the need for a One Health approach to tackle many of today’s pressing health challenges.
