Sports Illustrated lauds Brush Davisson

BURLINGTON — Kelly Brush Davisson has been selected as one of 10 Athletes Who Care by Sports Illustrated magazine.

The magazine’s Dec. 10 issue includes Brush Davisson on a list of athletes singled out for the charitable work they do off the playing field. Brush Davisson, 26, founded the Kelly Brush Foundation in 2006, following a ski racing crash that left her paralyzed. She was a member of the Middlebury College ski team at the time.

From her Lincoln studio an artist paints Vermont's landscape

The light on this cloudy November day is silver and stark, giving the world a washed-out look. Just the sort of day Andrew Wyeth would have loved to paint. But then, as I drive south on a dirt road in Lincoln, the light shifts. Sunlight spills through a gap in the clouds and the world transforms from bleak black-and-white to rich color.

Where before I’d been looking at frost-killed fields and the stubs of dead cornstalks, I’m now noticing the orangey light that illuminates the trees lining the road and brings out the greens still in the grass.

Police warn of imposters posing as DCF officials

WATERBURY (AP) — Police say they have received reports of suspicious people posing as representatives of the Vermont Department of Children and Families (DCF).

State Police spokeswoman Stephanie Dasaro said a woman and two men showed up at a Sunderland residence this past Monday, Dec. 3, and told a grandmother that a child’s parents were under investigation by “child protective services.”

State creates $1M grant fund for food and forestry firms

MIDDLEBURY — State officials late last week announced that they are soliciting applications from entrepreneurs who want a portion of nearly $1 million in grant funds set aside for food and forestry businesses.

Grants ranging from $3,000 to $100,000 will be awarded later this winter by Vermont’s Working Lands Enterprise Board from a $986,5000 fund designed to fuel the Green Mountain State’s economy and build its local food system while maintaining its open lands and natural vistas.

More police on Vermont roads for the holiday

WATERBURY — The Thanksgiving holiday opens a busy season for motorists traveling throughout Vermont. To encourage the motoring public to use their seatbelts, the Governor's Highway Safety Program (GHSP) will be sponsoring a holiday Click It or Ticket (CIOT) enforcement campaign.

Shumlin changes administrative ranks

MONTPELIER (AP) — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Tuesday shook up the top ranks of his administration, with the announcement of seven senior staff changes.

Chief of Staff Bill Lofy is leaving to join the Democratic Governors Association, which Shumlin hopes to chair after an election in that group next month.

Lofy will be replaced by Elizabeth Miller, currently commissioner of the Department of Public Service. She’ll be replaced there by Chris Recchia, who’s currently the deputy secretary of natural resources.

Political cartoon exhibit at college spotlights Pat Oliphant

MIDDLEBURY — On the occasion of this year’s national presidential election the Middlebury College Museum of Art has mounted an exhibit of 20 political cartoons — and one bronze sculpture — created by the noted political cartoonist Patrick Bruce “Pat” Oliphant (b.1935).

Panel puts VSP at lead in search and rescue

MONTPELIER — The Search and Rescue Strategic Plan Development Committee has completed its work, approving recommendations and proposed statutory changes to be presented to the upcoming Legislative session. Rep. Willem Jewett, D-Ripton, and former state police search and rescue team leader Jocelyn Stohl abstained from the vote taken at the Committee’s fourth and final meeting in Montpelier Oct. 24.

‘Moderation’ stressed by Brock in campaign

MIDDLEBURY — Former Ripton resident and Middlebury College graduate Randy Brock has worked to influence state policy as the Vermont Auditor of Accounts and as a state senator.

Now he wants to become Vermont’s chief executive. To that end, the Swanton Republican is taking on incumbent Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Putney, on Nov. 6.
