As a group of Addison County women found out on June 18, tackling the distance as a team still offers a significant challenge, but also leads to a fun, exciting and rewarding weekend — especially when the course runs right through the heart of Vermont.

Flooding damage aid on way

VERMONT — Addison County residents whose homes or businesses have been damaged by recent severe storms and flooding should be aware that many federal and local programs are now in place to help aid the recovery process.

Whether you are an individual whose property has sustained damage that impedes your ability to get to work, or a company that has seen a downturn in business due to flood-related damages, you may be eligible for aid from the state — but you won’t know if you don’t apply.

Vermont vintners promote northern wines with passport

VERMONT — Those who visit a Vermont winery before the end of the year may well find themselves compelled to visit a couple — or 20 — more.

That’s because the Vermont Grape and Wine Council two weeks ago launched its own version of the wildly popular Vermont brewery passport program. The passport promotion plots out 21 wineries and tasting rooms throughout the state, and participants who collect stickers from at least 10 will be entered in a January prize drawing.

Ski areas helping local farms with donations

JAY — What do skiing and dairy farming have in common?

Not much, it might seem, but two New England organizations would beg to differ. On June 5, Ski Vermont presented its first donation of $8,495 to Keep Local Farms, a Massachusetts organization.

“The skiing and farming economies run deep throughout our local communities,” said Ski Vermont president Parker Riehle. “Working together is vital to ensure the future success of these two iconic Vermont industries.”

Redistricting proposal would alter local House districts

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Apportionment Board (VAB) has drafted a controversial new map that re-draws several Addison County House districts and even splits one local town — Monkton.

The new map, which will set the boundaries for House districts that will be contested in the 2012 election, must be endorsed by the Legislature before it becomes law.

Rep. Welch calls for repeal of subsidies to ethanol industry

LAKE BOMOSEEN — Barb Woodard has seen firsthand the effects of ethanol on boat engines and it goes right to her bottom line.

“I think it’s a strong issue that needs to be addressed,” the co-owner of Woodard’s Marina said during a press conference hosted by Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., at the marina’s fuel dock last Thursday morning. “I would like to see a supply of non-ethanol fuel for recreational use.”

Land use organizations unite to increase impact

New law could energize solar power

VERMONT — Renewable energy advocates hope that a new law signed last week by Gov. Peter Shumlin will lead to a surge of solar power in the state’s energy grid. The Vermont Energy Act of 2011, which will take effect on July 1, mandates that all utility companies provide residential customers who use solar power with a 20-cent credit for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy they generate.

Lawmakers: 2011 session produced some big results

MONTPELIER — Local lawmakers said they will remember the 2011 legislative session for being short on funds but long on accomplishments and punctuality.

The gavel fell on the session on Friday, May 6 — one week ahead of schedule and in spite of a very busy agenda that included health care reform and a fiscal year 2012 budget that was $176 million in the red at the outset.

Legislation aims to reform dairy labor law

VERMONT — Labor has long been an issue for dairy farmers, but Vermont’s congressional delegation is seeking to alleviate some of that pressure with changes to federal guest worker policy.

At present, guest workers from other countries are limited to a one-year visa; and dairy farms, as non-seasonal operations, are barred from hiring through the program. The H-2A Improvement Act proposes changes to the current seasonal worker visa program that would allow dairy farmers to hire guest workers legally for a period of three years.
