Leahy2568.jpg

Editor’s note: Democrat Patrick Leahy, now 73, was the state’s attorney for Chittenden County when he was elected to represent Vermont in the U.S. Senate in 1974. Now the longest-serving active senator, he has the perspective, the connections and the power to accomplish a lot for his state and his country. Our reporter spent a day with Sen. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., praised President Barack Obama’s focus on income inequality in his annual State of the Union address last week, and urged his colleagues in Congress to back legislation that would raise the federal minimum wage.

“I’m glad that the president has recognized the enormity of the problem,” Sanders said in an interview with the Independent. “Frankly, I think he could have gotten into it a little bit deeper.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Peter Welch is not among the taller members of the U.S. House of Representatives, but the Vermont Democrat can hoof it. I’ve got about five inches on him, but I’m struggling to keep up as we wind through the tunnels and alleys somewhere beneath the Longworth House Office Building.

MONTPELIER — The Vermont House and Senate agriculture committees are gearing up for a showdown over changes to the state’s flagship land conservation program.

A special study committee chaired by Sen. Bobby Starr, D-Essex/Orleans, struck all the language from a bill that passed the House in 2013. The Senate version — still a rough draft — was discussed at the Statehouse on Tuesday evening at the fifth and final in a series of public hearings.

ESSEX JUNCTION — Francis Bronson of Bridport has been a regular at the annual Vermont Farm Show for 30 years, and this week attended the 82nd annual fair at the Champlain Valley Expo in Essex Junction even though he has left dairy farming.

While looking over some of the show’s more than 150 agricultural exhibits, Bronson said he was impressed by some of the technological advances on display.

“There’s some innovative thought processes on some of this stuff,” he said. “I wish some of it was around when I was still going.”
