Fifty years ago, University of Vermont professor James G. Chapman founded the Vermont Choral Union ? a community-based a cappella choral group. The ensemble of 36 singers is still going strong, now with Middlebury’s Jeff Rehbach at the helm. Rehbach will lead the Vermont Choral Union in three anniversary concerts next week: at the Mahaney Center for the Arts at Middlebury College on Friday, at the McCarthy Recital Hall at St. Michael’s College on Saturday and at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier on Sunday.

Lake cleanup to result in tax increases

Posted on April 13, 2017 |
By John Flowers

WEYBRIDGE — Addison County lawmakers on Monday converged on the Weybridge Congregational Church to continue a debate that has been reverberating in the Statehouse: How to pay the state’s share of the estimated $2.3 billion cost of cleaning up Lake Champlain and its tributaries.

The discussion centered on Act 64, aka the Clean Water Act, a massive cleanup effort that involves municipal sewer plants, farmers, and the many impermeable surfaces — including roads and parking lots — over which water can travel on its way to the lake.

Supreme Court to decide last link in Vermont Gas pipeline project

Posted on April 6, 2017 |
By Gaen Murphree

ADDISON COUNTY / MONTPELIER — Over four years of controversy surrounding the construction of a 41-mile natural gas pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes culminated in 30 minutes before the Vermont Supreme Court on Tuesday.

At issue was the legal question of whether Vermont Gas Systems should have been allowed to bury pipeline under Geprags Park in Hinesburg — the last major piece of conduit to be laid. It could be days or months before the Supreme Court issues its decision.

SALISBURY — Lawmakers believe that unless the exodus of Vermont youth to other states is reversed, the Green Mountain State will lose a large chunk of its tax base — not to mention a valuable pool of employees for businesses.

“These are the (people) who fuel our economy and … who pay into the revenues in the state,” Rep. Harvey Smith, R-New Haven, said at a Legislative Breakfast in Salisbury on March 27. “It’s going to be a balancing act as to how we stabilize our economy and our population.”

Business as usual for Vermont healthcare until feds act

Posted on April 3, 2017 |
By John Flowers

SALISBURY — While the Trump administration’s effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act failed in Congress, state lawmakers at the March 27 Legislative Breakfast in Salisbury said it’s too soon to tell what, if any, short- or long-term changes are in store for Vermont’s health care system.

“It’s all up in the air,” said Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Addison, whose committee deals with health care legislation.

Van Wyck alone in rejecting proposed state budget

Posted on April 3, 2017 |
By Elizabeth Hewitt VTDigger.org

MONTPELIER — Ferrisburgh state Rep. Warren Van Wyck was the only lawmaker voting nay when the Vermont House of Representatives advanced a $5.8 billion state budget package this past Thursday.

It was a rare moment of tripartisan financial unity as the House OK’d the state finance plan for the next fiscal year, which does not raise any new taxes or fees.

The budget gained preliminary approval on a vote of 143 in favor, one opposed. It was expected to pass by a similar margin when the House gave its final approval Friday.

Late winter pruning: The perfect antidote for cabin fever

Posted on April 3, 2017 |
By Judith Irven

n Late Winter pruning LEAD D71-711902.jpg

Late winter is cabin fever season; after months of indoor living we find ourselves yearning for spring, and we can surely be forgiven for grumbling about Vermont’s recent March blizzard.

Wikipedia describes cabin fever as “a claustrophobic reaction from being confined in a small space for an extended period of time, resulting in extreme irritability and restlessness, often accompanied by an urge to go outside, even in rain, snow, dark or hail.” I certainly understand the urge to get outdoors, but I prefer to skip the rain, dark and hail.
