State officials to Whiting-area residents: Please take EEE tests

Posted on December 6, 2012 |
By Lee Kahrs

WHITING — State health officials hope to conduct blood tests on area residents and determine how many people may possess the Eastern equine encephalitis antibodies without ever having gotten sick. That’s the message from a series of three public information meetings they held in the area to update residents in the wake of the first two human cases of EEE over the summer.

Depending on funding, there is also a plan to expand mosquito surveillance next year and hire additional field assistants to help gather samples.

Whiting considers dog ordinance

Posted on May 31, 2012 |
By Andrea Suozzo

WHITING — Following a dog bite incident in January, the Whiting selectboard has decided on the need for an animal ordinance.

The town still has 15 unregistered dogs, according to recent reports. Owners must provide proof that dogs have rabies shots upon registration, and the selectboard has agreed that it must have an ordinance as a matter of public safety. An ordinance would allow the town to enforce registration and safety in the case of dog bites.

WHITING — There’s been a lot to celebrate recently at the Whiting Community Church, not the least of which was a series of large, unexpected anonymous donations.

To start with, there was the church’s 200th birthday bash on Oct. 1, which drew more than 200 people despite rainy weather and raised $600.

People turned out to the 40-member church to eat, compete in three-legged races and a cross-cut saw tournament, attend services, bob for apples, watch the fireworks and, said Pastor Billy Jones, have a lot of fun.

WHITING — When Bulwagga Books and Gallery closes its doors after 15 years in business, Whiting will lose one of two retail businesses in town.

It won’t be the end of Bulwagga Books — owners John Travis and Ellen Kurrelmeyer will relocate to a new house in Middlebury and reopen as a smaller, appointment-only shop. But the closing marks the end of a long run that established Bulwagga Books as both a destination for book collectors and a quirky stopping point for the curious along Route 30.

Posted on October 4, 2010 |
By John Flowers

web_joyjones1045.jpg

WHITING — Whiting Republican Joy Jones hadn’t given serious thought to running for the Addison-Rutland-1 House seat until a week before the Aug. 24 primary, when she was unable to recruit a challenger to face incumbent Rep. Will Stevens, an independent who lives in Shoreham.

The folks she approached explained they were too busy with work, family and other commitments to run for office and, if elected, serve five months in Montpelier. The Addison-Rutland-1 district includes Orwell, Shoreham, Benson and Whiting.
