Districts offer publicly funded preschool

Addison Northeast, Addison Central and Addison Northwest supervisory unions — which cover 17 towns in the Bristol, Middlebury and Vergennes areas — all will support some sort of publicly funded preschool programs in 2015-2016.

What is publicly funded preschool?

Publicly funded preschool is defined as 10 hours per week (35 weeks per year, September-June) of developmentally appropriate early learning experiences based on Vermont’s Early Learning Standards.

Bike ride to aid Boe scholarship fund

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union is organizing a “Kelly Boe Memorial Bike Ride” on Monday, May 4, at 4 p.m., to provide seed money for a scholarship fund in honor of Boe, a Middlebury resident who was killed after being struck by a car while cycling in Weybridge on April 14.

The ride is being spearheaded by ACSU Superintendent Peter Burrows, an avid cyclist.

On Point In Education: Reauthorization of education law is opportunity for change

Signed into law in 1965 by Lyndon Johnson, it has set forth federal agendas on education and has been the primary pathway for federal funding to state and local agencies.

Changes to ID-4 school budget, meeting sought

MIDDLEBURY — The ID-4 school board on Feb. 9 will weigh a request by a group of citizens to shift the date of the district’s annual meeting and to have the Mary Hogan Elementary School budget voted by Australian ballot on Town Meeting Day.

Few races loom in ACSU communities

MIDDLEBURY — Local elections will rank low on the list of reasons to draw Middlebury-area residents to their respective town meetings this March.

Candidates for local school and municipal offices had until Monday to file their petitions with their town clerks. A survey of the seven towns that make up the Addison Central Supervisory Union show there will only be a handful of contested elections when Middlebury-area residents head to the polls on Town Meeting Day, March 3.

ACSU school budgets rising, some tax rates going up faster

MIDDLEBURY — The proposed 2015-2016 budgets for six of the Addison Central Supervisory Union’s seven elementary schools reflect spending increases ranging from 0.2 percent to 5.35 percent, but the impact on taxpayers in most communities will be greater due to declining enrollment and other variables.

UD-3 on track for 1.3 percent hike

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) voters in March will be asked to approve a UD-3 school spending plan of $17,287,008 for the 2015-2016 academic year, which reflects a 1.3-percent increase compared to this year.

The UD-3 budget covers the combined annual operating expenses for Middlebury Union middle and high schools. The spending plan is fielded each year by residents in the ACSU towns that feed MUMS and MUHS: Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Salisbury, Shoreham, Ripton and Weybridge.

ACSU to craft education plan

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union officials will spend the next year creating a strategic plan, and they’re asking for the public’s help. The plan will, for the first time, clearly define and codify the ACSU’s educational priorities for children educated in the district’s seven elementary schools along with Middlebury Union middle and high schools.

Cornwall and Bridport both need interim principals next year

CORNWALL — Two of the Addison Central Supervisory Union’s seven elementary schools — Bridport Central and Cornwall’s Bingham Memorial — will be led by interim leaders next year while permanent principals are being recruited this coming winter.

Peter Burrows, ACSU superintendent, confirmed last week that former Mary Hogan Elementary School Principal Bonnie Bourne and current Ripton Elementary Principal Tracey Harrington will co-manage Bridport Central for the 2014-2015 academic year.

DeBlois to take the helm at Addison Central School
