VERMONT — During the month of May, eight more dairy farms in Vermont shuttered their milking parlors, dropping the number from 1,001 to 993 — the first time in recent history that Vermont has had fewer than 1,000 dairy farms in the state.

MIDDLEBURY — In the past 10 years, national security threats have come to be almost synonymous with terrorism.

But the security threats that top the list of Julie Smith of the University of Vermont Extension are of a different nature: They include foot and mouth disease, dangerous weather in livestock production centers, and anything that could disrupt U.S. agricultural systems.

Vermont vintners promote northern wines with passport

VERMONT — Those who visit a Vermont winery before the end of the year may well find themselves compelled to visit a couple — or 20 — more.

That’s because the Vermont Grape and Wine Council two weeks ago launched its own version of the wildly popular Vermont brewery passport program. The passport promotion plots out 21 wineries and tasting rooms throughout the state, and participants who collect stickers from at least 10 will be entered in a January prize drawing.

JAY — What do skiing and dairy farming have in common?

Not much, it might seem, but two New England organizations would beg to differ. On June 5, Ski Vermont presented its first donation of $8,495 to Keep Local Farms, a Massachusetts organization.

“The skiing and farming economies run deep throughout our local communities,” said Ski Vermont president Parker Riehle. “Working together is vital to ensure the future success of these two iconic Vermont industries.”

ORWELL — In a barn at the Hall and Breen Farm on Monday morning, two lines of cows jostled for position, eager to enter the single-cow berths where they’d be rewarded with troughs of grain.

On the other side of the berths, Louis Hall and two maintenance workers watched as the robotic arms grasped each cow’s udders, milked, then released. As a cow left the stall, she pushed aside a bar that allowed the next cow to enter.

MIDDLEBURY — For those who think that chickens are only good for meat and eggs, take note: the flock being raised on the north campus of the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center has spent several months as teachers, as well.

ADDISON COUNTY — For farmers across the state, the wettest spring on record is causing setbacks and difficulties. And while the past week brought some drier weather, the heavy clay soils in Addison County continue to do what they do best: hold water.

“Addison County is having one of the hardest times in the state,” said Heather Darby of the University of Vermont Extension.

Loren Wood of Woodnotch Farm in Shoreham said the window for planting corn is closing quickly.

Growing up on a dairy farm offers a terrific education

BRIDPORT — For many teens, life’s all about hanging out with friends, sports, getting a job and coordinating weekend festivities.

For some Addison County teens, it’s about working and helping out on the farm. Although not every person who grows up on the farm takes an interest in the field, there are those who are passionate about farming and continue the generational trend in Vermont and care for their surroundings and their future.
