CORNWALL — Emery Tillman takes community service seriously — and not only in her backyard of Addison County. At the tender age of 17, Tillman has donated her time to environmental and humanitarian causes stretching from her hometown of Cornwall to Uganda, Africa.

Her efforts recently earned statewide recognition and will soon get national exposure, thanks to an award from Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Middlebury Lions recognize service

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Lions Club at its annual awards night banquet Monday honored four club members and one community member with one of its highest tributes, and bestowed its Lion of the Year award on member Cleon Bigelow.

In a celebration of another year of service to the local and worldwide community, Lion Tom Broughton presented the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowships to Lions Cathy Anderson, Dave Nourse, Donald “Doc” Hunt and Cory Newton, as well as to Mark Perrin, owner of Green Peppers Restaurant.

VERGENNES — For Vergennes writer Barry Estabrook, good things come in pairs.

At the James Beard Award ceremony last month, Estabrook took top honors for his food policy blog, “Politics of the Plate,” and he's also preparing for the release on June 7 of his new book, "Tomatoland."

VERGENNES — Like many 15-year-olds, Vergennes Union High School sophomore Kaitlin Leroux-Eastman listens to hip-hop, loves to hang around with her buddies, and enjoys the Twilight book series.

But probably not too many of the Vergennes resident’s peers match her nearly 200 hours of community service in the past year, conduct a church choir, and already have mapped out their college choice — St. Michael’s — and career plans — teaching music or French.

VERGENNES — Vergennes American Legion Post 14 on Thursday will bestow its annual Community Service Award on a woman who was born in a Ferrisburgh farmhouse 67 years ago and now organizes a half-dozen annual events in Vergennes.

Marguerite Senecal, the daughter of French-speaking immigrants from Ontario, has worked for the past 10 years for the Addison County Chamber of Commerce, most recently with the title of information specialist.

Independent named among best papers in New England

BOSTON — The Addison County Independent won nine awards — including the top award for publications its size — at the New England Newspaper and Press Association’s annual competition held in Boston this past weekend. The Independent’s sister paper, the Brandon Reporter, also earned two awards, including a first-place nod.
