Middlebury asks state reps for school tax reform and Rt. 7 rotary

Posted on December 11, 2014 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday gave its legislative delegation a brief but sharply worded wish list for the 2015 session: Give us a rotary at the intersection of Route 7 and Exchange Street, along with education finance reform.

The board conveyed that message to the four Democratic lawmakers taking part in the meeting: Sen. Christopher Bray of New Haven, Sen. Claire Ayer of Addison, Rep. Betty Nuovo of Middlebury, and Rep.-elect Amy Sheldon of Middlebury.

Opinion: Legislators right to raise concern about pipeline

Posted on September 3, 2014 |
By Judy Kowalczyk

Just a quick note, somewhat delayed, to thank Sens. Ayer and Bray and Rep. Jewett for their comments to Gov. Shumlin on the proposed Phase 2 pipeline (also found in the “Community Forum” section of the Addison Independent on Thursday, Aug. 7). It is so appreciated when our elected officials actually represent the citizens. Your actions do not go unrecognized.

Thanks again.

Some states have property rights advocates — why doesn't Vermont?

Posted on August 21, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

ADDISON COUNTY — For months, landowners along the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project pipeline route have asked state regulators to provide them with legal help to negotiate easements with Vermont Gas Systems.

The Office of the Attorney General does not represent private citizens, and many landowners feel the Department of Public Service has not offered adequate legal support, leaving them with few resources to represent their best interests.

Vermont Gas to offer mediation to landowners, begin eminent domain process

Posted on August 14, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems announced on Tuesday that it is employing a new tactic to secure land rights necessary to construct a natural gas pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury — the company will now provide independent mediators to help landowners negotiate with the company.

“We’re going to be offering neutral mediation for those landowners who we have not been able to reach agreements with,” company spokesman Steve Wark said.

Monkton to host third meeting on Vermont Gas pipeline

Posted on August 4, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

MONKTON — On Thursday Sen. Chris Bray will host a third meeting between Monkton residents and the Department of Public Service to address issues related to the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project, a pipeline that will run through the town.

While previous meetings have focused on the negotiating tactics used by Vermont Gas Systems to secure land use agreements from three dozen affected landowners in the town, this round of talks will center on possible soil contamination from a disinfectant spray used on Vermont Electric Company power poles.

Community Forum: Senators urge support for Phase II of Vt. Gas pipeline

Posted on July 21, 2014 |
By Sens. Kevin Mullin and Peg Flory

This week’s writers are State Sens. Kevin Mullin and Peg Flory, both of whom are Republicans representing Rutland County.

The Vermont way is for neighbors to help neighbors and communities to come together to solve challenges. Energy infrastructure, like natural gas service, is one of the most important areas for Vermonters to collaborate.

Opinion: Phase 2 Too High a Constitutional Price

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By Christopher Bray

Addison County is currently the scene of a controversial three-part drama.

Vermont Gas Systems/Gaz Métro (VGS/GM) has proposed the Addison Natural Gas Project (ANGP): Phase 1 will bring gas to Middlebury, and it has already received a Certificate of Public Good (CPG); Phase 2 is the subject of an application now before the Public Service Board (PSB); and Phase 3 is in the concept stage, and may someday bring gas from Middlebury to Rutland.

Opinion: Increase in bottle deposit would discourage littering

Posted on May 1, 2014 |
By Alice C. Grau

Editor’s note: The writer sent this letter to Rep. Harvey Smith and Sen. Chris Bray.

While working to pick up the trash along the roads and in the DAR State Park near my home in Bridport this week, it occurred to me that an increase in the deposit on beverage bottles and cans would do more to take care of this problem than any public service announcement.
